  2. China's claims are a lot greater than what most of the world is familiar with and what they publicly admit to. In the past, China used to suggest China was a lot bigger and included countries/territories all across Asia like Korea, Ryukyu Islands and former tributary states like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Java and Thailand. These are claims propagated by people like Mao Zedong and published in maps known as "Maps of National Shame" (国耻地图). Maybe an attempt at healing a wounded national identity at the time but some things remain the same.

Nobody thinks of Nepal having territorial disputes with China but China has encroached into Nepal in the past few years and has built things within Nepalese territory much to the embarrassment of the Nepalese government which does not want to offend China by lodging a diplomatic protest. So you can see how some things never change.

Fertility rates across much of developing Asia and Latin America is below replacement level, so all of these nations will face population decline by the middle of this century. Some of them will face population decline in the next 10-15 years like Thailand and Sri Lanka. Thailand's fertility rate, in particular, has dropped the fastest in Southeast Asia and is now only second to Singapore in terms of how low it is. The Economist ran two articles about the demographic crises in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam last year, declaring that these three countries are going to get old before they get rich because fertility rates continue to drop while living standards continue to rise that people are living longer and thus the elderly populations are rapidly growing.

If India were to just interfere in Bhutan's affairs, that would be a breach of their agreement and Bhutan's sovereignty in general. Bhutan is an independent country, it can do what it wants.

I think after the USA's reaction to India's neutrality in the Ukraine War, they know that they will always be on the chopping block if things were to go south between them and the US.

We've already seen glimpses of that in the past 5 years and especially earlier this year with India's decision to be neutral in the Ukraine War and buy oil from Russia and how upset the US was, even thinking whether to sanction India.

India is a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, its entire foreign policy is rooted in non-alignment since the end of WW2. This is why the country has traditionally remain neutral on many things. There have been cases where it has broken neutrality and paid consequences for it (e.g. Sri Lanka). This is not about pacificism but the fact that is knows its interests are more important than anything else going on around them. This is why they, despite being a democracy, have remained silent on the pro-democracy protests and coup in Myanmar for example. They maintain the same mentality that many other Asian and African countries harbour: neutrality which is why most Asian and African nations are part of the Non-Aligned Movement.

  35.  @dr.batman2530  The truth of the matter is you don't know what India will do. It is that type of country, so unpredictable. Once that country reaches a level of development comparable to China, I know they won't be tiptoeing around with the US anymore. As a political analyst put it, India is only interested in maintaining its own sphere of influence where its interests are unchallenged and China is willing to accept that as long as their interests aren't jeopardised. What the analyst basically said is that China sees an Asia where China and India are the sole regional powers with no US interference.

Singaporean people and the Singaporean government, that is based on meritocracy, would've led to a stable society in Guinea Bissau. It's about culture, not ethnicity or anything like that. If you are raised with the right mindset then you can succeed.

If you're going to argue that Rakhine State could belong to India you may as well claim most of Myanmar too as part of the Indian subcontinet because it seems to be that you're doing this based on culture and Myanmar (and the vast majority of Southeast Asia) is part of the Indian Cultural Sphere. You all see Rohingyas (who a minority in Rakhine) and assume that it's an argument for the claim that it belongs to India, it's not. Rohingyas themselves are Burmanised to an extent and many actually use Burmese names (e.g. Wai Wai Nu, a Burmese democracy activist of Rohingya descent).

  49.  @mgar313  The Burmese military persecutes Rohingyas because of WWII. The Rohingyas were bribed by the British to fight the Japanese instead of siding with the Burmese. As a result, they are seen as traitors for fighting alongside the British instead of fighting with the Burmese. General MinAung Hlaing of the Burmese military even said that this is "unfinished business from WWII" in regards to the Rohingya genocide. Rohingyas are not a majority of Rakhine. Rakhine State is known as Rakhine because of the Rakhine people (the majority ethnic group of Rakhine who practice Buddhism). Rohingyas have always been a minority in Rakhine.

There are many Rohingyas who look stereotypically "Bamar" and there are many Bamar/Burmese who look "stereotypically Indian". There are different terms in the Burmese language to describe the "Indian-like", "Chinese-like" features in Myanmar society. Rohingyas were known as Arakanese Muslims during the Arakan Kingdom days, there was no issue with Rohingyas. Rohingyas are linguistically and culturally quite similar to the Bengalis but due to co-existence with Rakhine people and following the conquest of Arakan by the Bamar from the central plain, Rohingyas have also been Burmanised to an extent.

Also, are you forgetting the millions of Europeans who moved to other parts of the world? There are ~800 million European-descended people outside of Europe and form the majority of the populations in countries like the US, Canada and Australia.

  72. Let's not forget the fact that your country broke apart because of religion. The Muslims did not want to live with the non-Muslims of India and demanded their own nation. To think that there would be no issues is naive because modern India still has to deal with Hindu-Muslims tensions even though Pakistan was literally created for Muslims of India. Also, Muslims would be the largest religious group in India (if it never divided, owing to their naturally high fertility rate) and I don't think they'd be happy with having a Hindu-dominated government like Modi in power.

  75.  @quackersna  Overpopulation? Maybe think about the fact that Asians didn't colonise the globe to allow for mass emigration of Asians out of that circle. If Europe never colonised the world, there would be around an additional ~900-1 billion European-descended people living in Europe on top of the population living there today. European-descended people make up the majority of North America and many parts of Latin America as well as Australia and New Zealand with large minorities in southern Africa and part European people all across Asia and the Pacific. Compare that to the around ~20 million Asian diaspora and you can see why there are more people within that circle today. Additionally, what's wrong with rice and dried fish? You are just not used to that diet.

My friend is a proud Indian but she recognises the fact that she's quite different to other Indian ethnic groups from areas outside of south India and believes a lot of problems could be solved if there was division. I know this is hard for many Indian nationalists to hear but there are Indians living in other countries who are reasonable in their thinking and are not scared to be critical of India.

Each state is like a country with a different ethnic group, language and culture. She still identifies as Indian but she just recognises the fact that there are many differences and it's true. Her people wear saris but their hair is uncovered but I see many North Indian Hindu women use the end of their saris to cover their hair like a Muslim woman. I remember as a kid seeing things about India on TV and sometimes they'd show women in Rajasthan and when the camera pointed at them, they'd use their sari to cover their face immediately. I eventually learned from a book I borrowed from the library that it's called purdah and many Hindu women in north India practice it since the Mughal era. Idk if that's still the case but this book was kind of old, dating back to the late 1990s.

I've watched Bollywood thriller films before and I've never actually seen anybody who looks like my friend in any of those films (which is a shame because Bollywood would be 100 times better if they had more diverse Indian representation). All the stars have pale skin and sharp features. My Tamil friend, on the other hand, has a round face, small nose - quite neotenous features and my Malayali friend has similar features and dark brown skin. My Malayali friend still identifies as Indian, you don't have to be upset but she just recognises the differences in her country of birth.

China has wielded control and restricted its control to East Asia and is not comparable to European imperialism. I don't agree with OP's statement about the West because we are not living in colonial times anymore but singling out Brazil and Russia as examples doesn't actually make sense.

  89.  @timsonins  No because the first civilisations outside of Africa were all in Asia (Fertile Crescent in Iraq, Indus Valley in India and Yangtze River in China). The first humans into Europe came from the Middle East, who were already civilised. One of the earliest waves of humans to leave Africa was the wave of humans that settled in India and everything east of it. The Sentinelese (the people in this video) are descendants of that early wave of humans. They remained isolated and did not develop with the rest of Asia.

When they rose, the land was split by water creating several islands in the same area. The flora and fauna of North Sentinel Island (owing to how small the island is) would have the same flora and fauna of the neighbouring, much larger, islands.

They were two of the most prominent nations to demand wavering of IP in 2021. Chinese state media reported jovially about India's decision to remain neutral in the Ukraine War, even commending the country in a rare statement. A lot of focus on these skirmishes of 2020 but no focus on the fact that many times, China and India also fall on the same page and they fall on the same page when it comes to Global South issues. You can never tell which side India will be on. China is one of India's largest foreign investors and China is India's second largest trading partner. The only thing stopping them from becoming allies are the border disputes and many seem to be waking up to that. Let's not forget that the two countries had deep cultural exchange before the arrival of the Europeans and the only reason the countries have a disputed border today is because of British colonisation.

In the 1980s, cyberpunk was all about the fear of Japanese domination and Japanese influence was abundant and then beginning in the 2010s and into today, cyberpunk now also features so much Chinese and Indian influence like Mandarin and Hindi signage. Now why would that be the case? Pretty self explanatory isn't it? You should read about techno-orientalism and how they view India. India is just another Japan and China waiting to happen, even in my country a very famous and respected political scientist said that we must treat India as a friend and as a possible future threat. Just a few months ago, an American professor controversially said that the US faces a threat from an "Asian elite" and spoke of derision towards educated Indian immigrants who she says "hate America" and are "anti-American". She was allowed to say all of this on primetime TV in the US on Fox News. You have to take those rose coloured glasses off. At the end of the day, we're all looking out for ourselves, If that means India becomes an enemy then that's what's going to happen.
