Fertility rates across much of developing Asia and Latin America is below replacement level, so all of these nations will face population decline by the middle of this century. Some of them will face population decline in the next 10-15 years like Thailand and Sri Lanka. Thailand's fertility rate, in particular, has dropped the fastest in Southeast Asia and is now only second to Singapore in terms of how low it is. The Economist ran two articles about the demographic crises in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam last year, declaring that these three countries are going to get old before they get rich because fertility rates continue to drop while living standards continue to rise that people are living longer and thus the elderly populations are rapidly growing.

  3. It's happening all over Asia. The fertility rates in Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, North Korea, India, Iran and Bangladesh are all below replacement level.

  4.  @doujinflip  Another big reason is because child mortality rates are higher in poorer nations so people have a lot of kids because only a few will survive to adulthood. Nobody ever talks about this.
