@Vermont2023 I don't think the Tamil-speaking Muslims felt anything because they were ethnically cleansed from their homes in eastern Sri Lanka by the LTTE. Language differences started the whole problem but it was ethnicity that resulted in the culmination of a civil war on the back of race riots.

@dylangeorge2441 Sri Lanka's fertility rate is low. Their population is only 22 million. Their population is set to peak and decline from 2037 onwards and you're saying they're having 5 kids? Their low population growth and rising life expectancy has resulted in a rapidly growing aging population, one of the highest in Asia. They also began to rely on foreign labour from other parts of Asia to full up vacant positions in their job market because of the growing lack of young people in the country. So what's with the stereotypical views of developing nations? You have access to Google, use it if you don't know what you're talking about!

@dylangeorge2441 You'd be saying the same about Europe if they didn't colonise the world resulting in ~900 million Europeans living outside of Europe. Most Asians stayed in Asia (Asian diaspora stands around 50-60 million with the Indians, Chinese and Indonesians having the largest diasporas - 17, 10 and 8 million respectively ) so that's why India, China and Indonesia have large populations. Sri Lanka with its 22 million is not a large population. Their woes are due to corruption. Do your research Dylan, stop being obtuse and ignorant to reality. With direct access to the internet, people will still say things that are categorically incorrect. Imagine how tired we are.🤦‍♂

Oh this is so tiring. Elle, these are middle class people who had kids before the crisis and were able to take care of them. How is this so hard for you to understand? They have a low population and they've had low population growth since the 1990s. They're set to peak and begin declining in 2037 as are many other countries in Asia over the coming decades. The problem has nothing to do with population. I don't know why people see a developing country and immediately think the issue is due to population, it's not. Let me also add that Asia's pressing issue today is not population growth but how to take care of their growing elderly populations (of which Sri Lanka is dealing with).

The case of Sri Lanka is quite peculiar because this country could have followed the path of success but it went down the route of ethnic disharmony and violence. The leaders of yesteryear were more interested in fuelling their egos and righting the wrongs of the past instead of moving on. Despite the end of the war in 2009 and the hallmarks of a new economic miracle, the situation did not improve because the country was fractured along ethnic lines. With high economic growth rates of 9% in the early 2010s, Sri Lanka eventually peaked as an upper middle income nation in 2019. Sri Lankans, at one point, enjoyed a per capita national income that was higher than all other South Asian countries except for the Maldives, along with a longer life expectancy as a result of strong social services such as healthcare and education. Sri Lankans began living longer and longer to the point that the country has now become one of the fastest aging societies in the world and began to recruit migrant workers from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar to combat its shrinking workforce (problems that high income nations face, not developing ones but it's a testament to Sri Lanka's successful efforts in boosting the quality of life for its people). Sri Lanka's last beacon of success was in 2020 when the country was successfully able to control COVID-19 by pursuing a Zero COVID policy using contact tracing and harnessing its good healthcare system bringing cases down to 0. Performing so well that it ranked #10 in the world among countries that were most successful in controlling the spread of COVID-19 by the Lowy Institute in early 2021. What we see now is civilisational collapse. All civilisations peak and decline. What a shame to see everything they achieved and what they could have achieved go down the drain. Sri Lanka now pays the price for everything wrong that its leaders, past and present, did to the country and its people. I hope in due time that the lives of the innocent people become better and that they can take control of their country from the Rajapaksas and other corrupt politicians as well as the nationalists and rebuild their country.

@djcesar7934 The situation bears similarities to what happened to Indonesia in the 1990s in terms of economic damage. Indonesia managed to recover, it takes time. Things don't just change overnight.

Actually they've turned towards India, Japan and China because three countries are their "historic allies". I think the US is interested in helping them though.

They owe more debt to the Asian Development Bank than they do to China. They also owe the same amount of debt to China that they owe to Japan. China is not the reason. India, China and Japan have traditionally been their allies so they've always had close relations with these three countries. Claiming it is the result of China would be incorrect.

@TheMacbandit They had children before the crisis and were able to take care of them. These are middle class people. I don't know why you think they're all poor. The average Sri Lankan woman has 1-2 children today. Their fertility rate is below 2.1 (the replacement level). Their standard of living was good for a developing country before the crisis and was so good that the average Sri Lankan began living longer to the point that Sri Lanka has one of the fastest growing aging populations in Asia today. It's also why they were able to control the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 before virulent strains emerged because their social indicators were good for a developing country. Appears to be that you're making assumptions about a country you don't know much, if anything at all, about. This video is mostly focusing on the middle class people who are now suffering.

@NegativeSpacesPositiveEntropy Are you aware colonisation wasn't pursued by Asian people and that's why Asia is densely populated today? Europe would be as densely populated as Asia if it weren't for colonisation. ~900 million Europeans live outside of Europe compared to around ~60 million Asians who live outside of Asia. All this focus on Asia, that they are overpopulated and they're suffering from population growth when there are two big reasons why they are densely populated, one which I previously explained and the one I'm about to explain. Asia, being the continent where the first human civilisations emerged outside of Africa (Sumer, Indus Valley, Yellow River), was always a stable area for human survival so when civilisations are successful, population grows and societies advance. Before the Age of Exploration, Asia was the centre of global economic gravity and housed the two largest economies in the world at the time.

@NegativeSpacesPositiveEntropy The same thing happened to Europe but with the Age of Exploration which led to colonisation of other parts of the world, new lands were discovered in which Europeans could settle on. That's why ~900 million European-descended people live outside of Europe today. Just imagine if all those European-descended people lived in Europe today, how densely populated the continent would be?

I fully understand what you are saying and I actually am interested in what you're interested too, particularly regarding the developing world. However, the situation in Sri Lanka has literally nothing to do with population growth. Their population has been growing at a slow pace for decades. They will peak in their population in 2037 and begin declining afterwards. Population growth is not a concern for them, the concern they had before this crisis started was how to take care of their growing elderly population which will account for more than 1/4 of their population by 2030. They also were grappling with the issue that there weren't enough young people anymore as less people were having babies and so their workforce was beginning to shrink. So they began inviting temporary migrants from India, Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh to fill up vacant positions in their job market.

The country was an upper middle income nation in 2019 and living standards continued to rise for them, even during the war years, so that's why they began facing the issue of a rapidly growing elderly population. For a developing country, they had a very good education and healthcare system. Their good education system allowed the government to teach family planning many decades ago and their good healthcare system allowed them to control the spread of COVID-19 in 2020, successfully bringing down cases to 0 and pursuing the COVID Zero policy that was also practiced in a lot of other Asia-Pacific nations. For most people in this country, it's a shock for them because they haven't had to deal with something like this. The middle class population in Sri Lanka has always lived comfortably but now they are suffering in ways they had never imagined. Their problems have nothing to do with population, it's because their corrupt government stole all of their money.

Sri Lanka is not India. Just because the majority of people there look "Indian" doesn't mean it's another India. Most people are Buddhist and the country is culturally tied to both India and to Southeast Asia and the Maldives as well. Before the crisis, the country has traditionally been better than India in terms of social indicators. They had a better quality of life than the average Indian, had a higher national income than India, with a longer life expectancy many Sri Lankans began living longer which has now led to an increasingly rapidly aging population. Their low population growth eventually in resulted in them hiring Indians, Bangladeshis, Nepalese and Burmese to fill up vacant positions in their job market and their good education and healthcare systems allowed them to control the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 bringing cases down to 0. They peaked as an upper middle income nation in 2019 before they descended into this crisis in the 2020s.
