@silentkiller421 Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew expressed regret at what happened to Sri Lanka for decades. He spoke about how the Sinhalese nationalism disenfranchised the most educated ethnic group in the country who are the Sri Lankan Tamils and expressed anger at what Mahinda Rajapaksa had done to ruin the country's trajectory. You're trying to find a reason as to why Sri Lanka failed and link it to other South Asian countries but what's happening in mainland South Asia has nothing to do with what happened in Sri Lanka. For Sri Lanka, they were colonised and the Sinhalese felt they were disenfranchised by the colonial policies that favoured the Tamils. So they wanted to right the wrongs of the past and in that process they destroyed their country by favouring the Sinhalese over everybody else. Lee Kuan Yew was very fond of the Singaporean Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) Tamil community. One of the founding political fathers of Singapore and close friends of Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore was a Sri Lankan Tamil. Lee was very vocal about the fact that Sri Lanka's disenfranchisement of the Sri Lankan Tamils was part of the reason why the country failed. The reality is that the Sri Lankan Tamils were more educated and stereotypically speaking, in Sri Lanka, people view the Sri Lankan Tamils as more intelligent. When you look at Singapore, there has long been a history of Sri Lankan Tamils in Singaporean politics and other sectors. Lee famously spoke about how despite being a small minority in Singapore their contribution to the development of Singapore has been paramount. What Lee believed was that had Sri Lankan Tamils still had influence in the nation, the country would've been in a better place and it's true. Tamils make up almost 1/4 of the population, you can't get anywhere by alienating 21% of your nation's people.

@jacku8304 The entire country was made up of different kingdoms that were united under the British but the reality is that bulk of Northeast India is culturally like the rest of India in that they were influenced by Hinduism and that same cultural civilisation.

@silentkiller421 No, Sri Lanka's problems all come down to its treatment of its ethnic minorities, particularly the Tamils. You can't compare Sri Lanka to Malaysia because in Malaysia, the Chinese and Indians are not native to Malaysia and they are also not confined to certain parts of the country, they are found across the entire country. In Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Tamils are native to Sri Lanka and are found across the island but predominantly in the north and east. By enforcing the Sinhala Only Act, they demonised all ethnic minorities and made it seem like they were not valid to be part of the nation. People focus on the Tamils and rightfully so but the Eurasian Burghers also felt disadvantaged too as they mostly spoke English and consequently many left for Australia. The Sri Lankan Moors spoke Tamil and the Sri Lankan Malays spoke Sri Lankan Malay. By making Sinhalese the official language and medium of instruction, they put the Sinhalese at the top and everybody ese at the bottom. A country can't function if its citizens don't feel like they belong.

I think you visited Singapore with an already preconceived idea of the nation and then when you spoke to locals you spoke about the government and then came here to YouTube to speak down on the nation. Idk why you're even saying "China mentality", are you saying that only because most Singaporeans are Chinese? I'm asking because the difference between Singapore and China in terms of governance are very different. How much will I win if I bet that you had no idea that there are ethnic groups that are part of the Singaporean population?

@unuldintrevoi3350 I don't know what country you're from but you were obviously dealing with severe cultural shock because you probably heard very little about Singapore. Your experiences in Japan and Thailand were better because Japan is fetishised and Thailand is famed for being a tourist hotspot that attracts both the upper and lower class tourists. In regards to Singapore, it was hard for you to comprehend that a democratic society that has faith in the same political party at every election could be filled with people that are actually happy. Domestic helpers are not slaves and it's very wrong and offensive of you to call them that.

Idk what you know about those countries but both Iran and Sri Lanka are a lot more socially developed than India and their human development and national income rankings are a lot higher than India's rankings.

India has an infant mortality rate of 27.695 deaths per 1000 live births. Sri Lanka's is 6.282 deaths per 1000 live births and Lebanon's is 8.913 deaths per 1000 live births. India's life expectancy is 70, Sri Lanka's is 76 and Lebanon's is 77. India's HDI in 2024 stands at 0.66, Sri Lanka's at 0.79 and Lebanon's at 0.74 and for some reason you think India is a lot better than both of these countries? Something is not clicking here.

@joepcarspots8321 and the Japanese also deal with male perverts taking photos of girls on the train, they have to have separate carriages for women and their phones need to have the shutter sound on so people know that someone is taking a photo because of all of the perverted behaviour from men. Singapore being ranked #1 makes sense. Westerners believe Singapore is a dictatorship but it's not and it's actually because Singapore has a traditional Asian cultural mentality with Western influences. The country, after all, was built on something that Lee Kuan Yew called "Asian values".

With all due respect, no it can't because it would mean Sri Lanka and the Maldives would have to rank a lot higher but the positions they received in this video makes sense.
