Colorism in South Asian communities is not completely the result of British colonisation. Fair skin was uplifted and considered attractive long before South Asia was invaded by other groups. It's just that with the colonisation by the British, fair skin became racialised as well. To say it's purely due to British colonisation is to ignore the deep roots this issue has in South Asian communities. Neither Nepal or Bhutan were colonised by the British but fair skin is considered a beauty ideal in both countries. Historically, India culturally influenced other parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia and fair skin ideals ranging from Nepal to Cambodia trace back to the cultural impact of Indian literature which prized fair skin and sharp noses among other ideals.

@peterparker9954 Ukraine is a developing (third world) country. Countries that are always viewed as "third world" like Vietnam, Malaysia and Bangladesh are wealthier than Ukraine and are stable with very high economic growth rates and thriving tech and textile manufacturing industries. There are areas in these countries that are on par with the developed world, especially Malaysia (which is predicted to become a developed country in a few years).

@KangMinseok I know income is not the only metric but the other metrics for Ukraine place it into the developing world category. It's a middle income nation meaning it is developing or what people used to say before the 21st Century began, "third world". It's blatant ignorance for that British reporter to say that. She clearly didn't do her research or clearly holds biases in how she views the world. To her, Europe is all developed but a country like Malaysia or Vietnam or Maldives or Thailand or Bangladesh is developing (third world) despite the fact that they have thriving tech manufacturing industries or good healthcare or high human development (HDI) status. @aleenaprasannan2146 Well to be fair, her skin tone isn't considered ideal in South Asian communities which explains why she's speaking about this. It's fair white skin that's considered the ultimate ideal in South Asian cultures, the type of skin tone that Indian actress Shivangi Joshi or Nepalese actress Aditi Budhathoki has.

@aleenaprasannan2146 I can tell that your whole world revolves around Bollywood and despite the fact that this video says "South Asian" your whole worldview is centred around North Indian skewing Bollywood stars not realising that there are other stars in South Asia that are popular across the region. Priyanka and Deepika are exceptions. Google "Miss Universe India 2019 contestants", that's the ideal type of beauty for people across the WHOLE of South Asia. Hamel Patel does not fit that and she has every right to speak up. Idk why you're trying to shut this girl down. At this rate, you shouldn't be speaking either because you have the same skin tone as hers right?

The issue is when South Asians compliment fair skinned South Asians by shaming darker skinned South Asians. This is the issue.

@aleenaprasannan2146 She probably faced discrimination from her family or other Indian or South Asian people and that's probably why she feels strongly about it and wanting to showcase her feelings about the topic so others in her situation can relate. Idk why you immediately think when it's about discrimination among minorities in Western countries, you always think it's the majority discriminating against the minority. Have you thought about the fact that racism is rampant among Indian people? They're racist and colorist to their own kind. She's obviously talking about the discrimination she's faced from other Indians.

@divineflu34567 Southeast Asia (except for Vietnam) was not influenced by Chinese beauty standards. The root of most Southeast Asian cultures is Indic. Everything from clothing, architecture, music, language, scripts, literature, art, etiquette, mannerism and so on are of Indian origin. Look at their beauty standards. Do you know what traditional Southeast Asian beauty looks like? It's not Chinese-looking. It's typical Southeast Asian looking with often pale or lightly tan skin. It's much more in line with Indian beauty than Chinese beauty. Look at the traditional Khmer apsara dancers of Cambodia or the Balinese dancers of Indonesia, they're all traditional Southeast Asian beauty with Indian influenced ornaments, jewellery and clothing.

@divineflu34567 The whole of South Asia was not colonised by the British though. South Asia had its own beauty ideals on features too. You're under the belief that fair skin as never idolised anywhere in South Asia but it was. There are examples across the region of both fair skin and dark skin being associated with beauty. British and Mughal colonisation of India only racialised the concept of fair skin. Before that, fair skin was merely skin tone and nothing else.

@peterfireflylund It does. Ukraine's GDP per capita places it in the developing category. There are other developing countries that are constantly viewed as "third world" but are wealthier and have good healthcare and good living standards almost on par with the developed world but are still viewed as "third world" such as Malaysia and the Maldives.

@neptunesnymph It's true though. Colonisation only partially played a role. It exacerbated historical beauty ideals in South Asia. Not all of South Asia was colonised. Nepal and Bhutan were not colonised by pale fair skin is considered the beauty ideal in both of these countries. So it's wrong to say it's purely the result of colonisation. There's a lot more to it.

@divineflu34567 No because Indian beauty ideals spread across South and Southeast Asia through the broader spread of Indian cultural influences and fair skin was considered ideal. This is why Nepal, Bhutan and Thailand (countries that are part of the Indian Cultural Sphere and never colonised) all prefer fair skin and Indian ideals presented ideas of fair skin and sharp noses to these cultures. British colonisation only racialised fair skin, before that fair skin was considered beautiful and associated with those that were wealthy.

@divineflu34567 No they don't. Classical beauty in these countries is in line with Indic influences. All the portrayals of national icons like ancient heroes look more Indic than Sinic (Chinese).

It's only European colonisation that racialised the concept of fair skin and exacerbated the situation. So no, sorry but you can't insert yourself into this situation because colorism and the hue of fair skin people want in South Asian cultures is different to what other cultures prefer. I can understand someone from another Asian background (like SE Asian or East Asian) inserting themselves into this because preference for lighter skin in Asian cultures dates back to the influences of ancient China and India but someone of non-Asian background does not understand the cultural origins of this issue.

It's just that people like Aditi and Indian actress Shivangi Joshi have the type of fair skin that many women (and men) want in South Asian cultures. It doesn't matter if her skin tone is preferred in the US. She's speaking from a South Asian perspective. If she's speaking up on it then she's obviously faced discrimination from her family (and this is what happens in many Asian families in the West, they still harbour colorist attitudes despite living in the West where fair is not the ideal).

@Funnyeboi Miss World India and Miss Universe India are notorious for picking fair skinned women. There was actually controversy in 2019 after a photo of the Miss India contestants went viral because they all had fair skin and straight long dark hair. You should Google "Miss India 2019 contestants", it's crazy to see how homogenous Indian beauty ideals are. Anyway, there is a shifting attitude in recent years - same thing is happening in Thailand and some other Asian countries. I understand that you're speaking from your perspective and you can say what you want, that's okay. It's just that Hamel Patel's skin tone is not considered the ideal in South Asia or any other part of Asia. Her features aren't the exact ideal either which makes her speaking up very important. I think Shivangi Joshi has the type of features people across the whole of South Asia (from India to Bhutan) want (almond shape eyes, small nose, straight black hair).

@Momoa786 In Latin America, Arabs are classified as and seen as "white" due to being white passing and predominantly Christian. There have been many Latin American presidents who are of Arab origin.

@Momoa786 None of this is surprising. Arabs and Europeans are of basal West Eurasian origin and closely related to each other in comparison to other world populations. One of the main ancestral components of Europeans are the Anatolian hunter-gatherers (who originated in the Middle East).

@iscifion7122 What is "brown"? Jews are not brown, they have fair skin and look very similar to Europeans. This whole "Asia = brown" idea is incorrect. So many people in Western Asia are white passing.

@Momoa786 Have you seen the blonde haired Syrians and Lebanese? Myriam Klink is Lebanese and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She can easily pass in Estonia and Denmark and every other part of Europe you want separated from southern Europe.

@Momoa786 Many Arabs and other related groups can pass in northern Europe with ease. Josef Johansson, a Swedish singer of Tunisian descent can easily pass in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia and other parts of northern Europe. His name is also Swedish which makes him even more indistinguishable from the native Swedish population.

Zinedine Zidane, John Elway, Doug Flutie, Brian Habib, Jeff George, Jillian Michaels (half Arab, half Jew - full Middle Eastern), Djamel Mesbah, Kerim Frei, Josef Boumedienne, Adam El-Abd and Amal Clooney are of Arab/Middle Eastern descent. They can pass in Sweden, Germany, France, UK, Estonia, Netherlands and every other part of Europe you want to distance from southern Europe.😁

When Indians and other South Asians find the most palest skinned people (as white as paper) to feature on TV, in films and runways, you can't expect South Asian people any shade darker than pale white to speak up on this issue.

If it was due to British colonisation, then other parts of South Asia that ere not colonised would no consider fair skin to be the ideal. Fair skin has always been associated with the wealthy and dark skin with those that toil in the sun. It has never been racial because this system was imposed within the same ethnic group.
