Fact of the matter is that JS is the only widely supported scripting language, just like HTML is the only widely supported markup language. I don't really see how that makes HTML "absolutely essential" but JS "arbitrary". There are plenty of other markup languages. They just aren't supported by browsers.

  6.  @xrafter  It originally was created simply because the guys working on early Unix ran out of disk space, bought a new harddrive, and had to mount the drive somewhere. Nowadays in theory it serves the purpose of being able to separate the core system utilities from optional packages, but in practice it serves little purpose. On Arch /bin and others are just symlinks to /usr/bin and alike. I believe it originally just meant "user" and other meanings were invented after the fact.

  7. Yes. Our work has very much become a cycle of endlessly learning new ways to do the same things. That's why I wouldn't want to be a frontend dev, because in that field it's the worst. Endless new buzzwords and "new" abstractions for very simple things. You want a button on the website? We had a solution for that. It was the <button> tag. Now there are apparently 50 better solutions.

  8.  @atift5465  Companies certainly do that, but they have an organizational rather than a technical reason. If they wouldn't do that, it would become harder and harder to hire new employees. That's why some of the best paying programming jobs are at banks and in the aviation industry. Our economy and lives depend on those, so it's safe to say that technically their software works pretty darn well. But that's not why those jobs are paying well. That's because they both use old technology that hardly anyone knows anymore; Fortran in the banking industry, and Ada in the aviation.

  9.  @tbqhwyf  If the GPU supports the codec that will not be a problem. What the GPU can't always do is find the optimal way to encode something, but decoding is a much more straightforward process.

  10. You don't actually have to use the shell. Most popular distros come with a fully featured desktop environment out of the box, which isn't that different from Windows. You have a file manager, text editors, all sorts of graphical configuration tools, etc.

  11. There can be lots of uses for that in memory management. But that's not really the reason. The reason is simply that a pointer is nothing but a variable; a number representing the memory address. And malloc and free are just functions like any other. C is a system language, and this is a pretty straightforward representation of what actually happens in hardware. It is a number on the stack or in a register, whether the language hides that fact or not. The alternative would be to forcibly zero it out, but that is not desirable in a system programming language.

  12.  @Arcidi225  In C you can use a pointer in two different ways. You can reassign it to point to something else, which is fine. But you can also use it to change the value at the memory it is pointing to. That is a problem if the memory has been freed, because it could very well be used for something else in the meantime.

  19.  @traveller23e  The linux console isn't restricted to characters (usually). Even without a windowing system the console is just a virtual character device on top of a graphical framebuffer. You can still run the classic VGA text driver, which assumes a hardware character device, but even then the VGA card is nowadays emulated. Linux will think it communicates with a VGA text card, but actually communicates with a piece of compatibility code from the BIOS.

  21.  @Brick_One_A_Lego_Story  I recently saw a tour through an IBM manufacturing plant. They're making some of the most advanced computers in the world there. And what catches my eye on one of the millions of dollars machines? The XP screensaver. I suppose it doesn't matter. It's an industrial machine, not connected, so when it works they probably just reuse an existing binary image of the entire system controlling it.

This is true in every nation in the world, and a concept that the vast majority of people agree on. Socrates infamously chose to live in poverty. Newton was a well respected professor who could and did rightfully claim fees for his publications. Ownership, whether material or not, is always enforced by force. The only reason you "own" anything is because the law says so. Ownership is not some law of nature. It is a societal construct.

  23.  @someguy4915  There's basically three options. 1) every laptop runs on the same or one of a few system images, 2) every laptop stores its own restore point and only pulls the command/code to restore it, or 3) there is one stored per laptop but they are kept in sync using only diffs. And why does that have to happen within a minute or two? Every device can simply pick a random time of the day to create a snapshot. On a sidenote: the internet is somewhat bigger than you seem to think. The world produces around 500 exabytes, or 500.000 TB per day.

  28. No, it's in the order of the PATH variable - from left to right. The usual PATH on Linux is "/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin", with /usr/local/bin being for local system overrides of the distro's packages. The trick to add a directory in front is to do $PATH=/some/thing:$PATH

  38.  @andybrice2711  Are we though? Yeah, we still need to do that space colonization thing, but the consumer market I'd say is pretty saturated. Every app that comes out just feels like a clone of something we already had. And were it not for the ever changing standards and platforms, I'd probably be perfectly happy with the first browser that introduced tabs. Nothing really spectacular has changed from the consumer perspective since that.

  40. "Weak" AI is a bit of a misnomer. A better term is narrow AI. It can do only one thing, but that doesn't say anything about how good it does that. Comparable to how a human specialist often can't look at something in his field from a broader perspective. They can be excellent in their field, while seeming to be complete idiots about any other aspect of life.

  46.  @pl4gueis  The practical reason is that malloc() is just a function that returns a pointer, and free() is just a function that takes a pointer as an argument. The compiler doesn't know anything else about them. Even if the compiler would know about their functionality, there could be reasons to use that pointer after free(); cache invalidation for example.

  47. ​ @pl4gueis  Everything in a language is a result of design choices. Nothing has to be the way it is. But again, C is primarily a system programming language. malloc() and free() are themselves written in C. The operating system is written in C. When you call malloc() or free() the compiler doesn't know anything except that you call a function that requires a pointer. That function is usually located in a dynamic library, so it only gets resolved at runtime. The compiler can't even know what they do. You can also implement them yourself, which is not uncommon, and in the case of operating systems that is a necessity. All of that would be impossible or at least complicated if the compiler would treat those as some sort of special builtin constructs. Machines don't have memory management functions. Those are usually written in a system language - C.

  48.  @pl4gueis  Also, I wouldn't know how the compiler would keep track of that. What if a variable is freed in some other function? In that case the compiler can't know, so you'd still have the same problem. It could at most catch a fraction of use-after-free errors; the most obvious ones. Usually this sort of thing happens when memory is freed in one part of a codebase, unbeknownst to another part that is using that memory; sometimes in different threads even. The cases where this happens within one function are few and far between, because those are easily spotted by humans as well.

  49.  @elexbeats  C is very far from dead. All major operating systems are written mostly in C with some assembly, and most lower level libraries and programs are as well; networking, databases, graphics, audio... pretty much all basic functionality on computers is coded in C.

  50. It won't replace what we call "high art". It definitely does replace commercial art; things like book covers, advertisements, games, magazine illustrations, etc. While we often don't consider that when talking about art, that is what most artists actually live off.
