The expression arose in the early 20th century with several variations, and became popular during the Ukrainian war of independence (1917-1921).[1] In the 1930s, it was used by a variety of Ukrainian nationalist groups, in particular, Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), and later by the Ukrainian diaspora and refugee groups in the Western bloc during the cold war. The Soviet Union banned the use of this motto, and the Soviet and later Russian governments tried to discredit it.[2] The motto resurfaced in Ukraine during the country's struggle for independence in connection with the fall of the Soviet Union, and again during the Euromaidan revolution, as well as during the Russo-Ukrainian war since 2014.
