@jamesmain_email6969 yes, I think in this war of attrition, the Russian troops are doing well. you mention "huge costs". tell me two things. exactly how many Russian troops/Wagner troops were lost in the Soledar operation, and exactly how many Ukrainian troops? unless you have accurate numbers, reliable numbers, you can't be sure about "huge costs". I mean if Russia lost a load of convicts and mercenaries, but Ukraine lost some of its finest battalions, I would say that shows Russia is doing well, right? in a war of attrition, why is momentum of any importance?

@ChrisVillagomez Napoleon lost because, just as in Ukraine, Russian troops fell back and ceded territory to a dumb enemy that could only think in terms of territory. General Winter stepped in and wiped out Napoleon's forces. Demilitarization of France complete. Stalin knew that "quantity is a quality in itself" and outmanned German forces. Again, NATO needs to keep focused on the 30 million men that Russia can call on, and the 300,000 remaining men Ukraine has yet to force into military service.

@jamesmain_email6969 got it all backwards, dude. you don't know how many nor which Russian troops died in the first month. Only a small number of people in the Kremlin know that, so you can put your crystal ball away. Russia has 30 million men it can call on to fight this war, if needed. Ukraine is down to 300,000. It's Zelensky moving dead troops around, hence the convicts and mercenaries just routed the Ukrainian last ditch cannon fodder in Soledar.

@jamesmain_email6969 you just named one what? what you call facts, I call bs, I suspect. the bottom line is you have no idea what the Russian death toll is, and it is foolish to assume what it is. it would be wise of you to see how Russia prevailed in Syria and Chechnya, its tactics of attrition and how it plans long term and with contingencies. James, dude, you have so much to learn. try to start sifting "facts" from speculation.

@Kieron Mac that's my feeling. i can't imagine Ukraine has anything like a full fighting force left, and I get a feeling Russia is advancing slowly to preserve as many of its own troops as possible. Russia has no time scale, we have to be patient to see how they proceed.

I certainly distrust media claims when they mention "heavy losses" for one side, but then silence on the other side. to me, if General Milley admits 100,000 casualties on the Ukrainian side, I would have no reason to disbelieve him. he has access to such info. he has no access to info on Russian losses, so I would not believe any claims he makes about Russian losses. Ukraine admits it is out fired by 6:1 on artillery shells, so 6 out of 7 shells fired in this war are raining down on Ukrainian troops. Makes me think, most probably, the kill rate is in Russia's favor.

Russia's taking of Soledar is not important symbolically or strategically. it is important because it shatters the myth of Russia struggling. let this sink in.....a bunch of mercenaries and convicts just routed Ukraine's finest. Trained by NATO, armed by NATO, advised by NATO, Defeated by a force low on morale, running out of weapons, incompetent and desperate, we were told. Soledar is important because it shows the Western media as deluded lying scum that can't report the truth. that's why it is important.

@jamesmain_email6969 on the contrary, frozen ground in winter means momentum is possible. attrition of men is the issue. the side that wins has fighting men on the field, the side that loses doesn't. it's all important. the problem is that Ukraine is NOT being well supplied at all, hence the constant begging to NATO for more of everything! what makes you think Russian men are not well trained? been through their training program have you? what makes you think Ukraine has better equipment? you make a lot of assumptions, and that is leading you astray. Spring may well be when more happens. but it may not.

@jamesmain_email6969 there are some major factors for the Russian forces that distinguish its tactics from WW1 tactics. Firstly, Russia has absolute superiority in artillery, by Ukrainian admission, six shells fall on Ukrainian soldiers for every one that falls on a Russian position. That means the Ukrainian positions are pounded to dust and corpse strewn so that the Wagner convicts (Russia is wisely keeping back as many of its elite forces for later) have a slightly easier job in the clearance, mop up, street to street battles. not at all like the "over the top" tactics of WW1.

Being specific or vague is irrelevant. in a war of attrition, everything hinges on the kill rate and resources. no one knows the kill rate, so it hinges on whether you feel Russians are dying in greater numbers than Ukrainians or not, and if they are, what resources does Russia have to replace those losses. Yep, Russia will win (partly because its aims are limited and Ukraine's are close to unattainable).

General Milley and Ursula van der Leyen have mentioned 100,000 Ukrainian dead, and periodically Ukraine announces their own losses. We also know that Ukraine admits to being out-shelled 6:1 by Russian artillery. Is it possible Russian losses are greater than Ukraine's? yes, possible. but given the rate of shells raining down on each side, it is pretty damn unlikely, at 6:1, that Russian losses are higher. Believe that if you wish, but it makes no sense.

@jamesmain_email6969 I assume Russia is keeping some elite units in reserve because most of Russia's million man army is not in Ukraine. It makes sense to use convicts and mercenaries on the front line first, losing them is of little importance, and lo and behold, these convicts are doing well! a win win for Russia. but yes, maybe Russia has already thrown all its elite forces into battle already. it is not what they did in Chechnya, nor in Syria. so far, it looks to me as if Ukraine is going by the same playbook as Chechnya and Syria.

@jamesmain_email6969 careful, again, about assuming the wrong thing about generals being moved around. it could well be that Suvorikin has done his job of successfully mobilizing the reservists and stabilizing the front lines. Suvorikin is a proponent of war by attrition, and is not known to favor mass offenses. Gerasimov may have been put in charge because a major offensive is on the way. again, do not assume a change of general is due to bad news. could well be bad news for Ukraine coming up.

Ukraine started this conflict with hundreds of tanks, and if you believe the Western media, captured loads of abandoned Russian tanks. what happened to them all? Throughout this conflict former Warsaw pact counties have been sending as many tanks as they can to Ukraine. what has happened to them all? The West is in pure panic, because every time they send a "game changer", it makes no difference. "more stingers, more javelins, more M777s, more himars, more Bradleys" and the chant goes on. but here we are, and the convicts and mercenaries are taking Soledar. NATO's problem is that it is used to, and everything is predicated on, air superiority. in this conflict, it is the enemy that has air superiority, and NATO is stuck. Believe me, the Western tanks will roll in, many will be destroyed before they get to the battlefield, and many will be destroyed on the battlefield. there is also the chance Gerasimov will lead an invasion from Belarus that cuts off the supply route from Poland. Fingers crossed he does.

@jamesmain_email6969 keep in mind another assumption that could well be false. namely, that the Russians have suffered huge losses. Many commentators have said that the Russians really have barely entered fighting yet. Most of the heavy lifting in Donbass so far has been done by the DPR and LPR, with Chechens leading the way in the street fighting. The Wagners, especially the convicts, have been pushed to the front in Bakhmut and Soledar. While the death toll on the Russian side might by heavy, many are thinking the actual Russian soldier death toll may well be quite low. Remember, the BBC tried to track all Russian soldier deaths through burials etc, and abandoned the project when the number they arrived at was very low. No one should assume the Russian death toll is high. it might be, but probably isn't.
