it is wonderful to see that Russia is showing NATO what an impotent paper tiger it is. Putin is the best leader in the world. If only the UK had a leader to stand up for the rights of ethnic Brits.

@AtheistEve keep in mind, when you are a poor family in Donetsk and the Azov brigade are shelling your city day in and day out, it is not so easy to just leave everything behind and scramble over a war zone to the border. have a heart! Russia wisely aided the DPR and LPR in their struggle for autonomy and then for independence. Shame on NATO for backing the aggressors in this conflict.

@AtheistEve the problem is, Russia saw how the USA refused to allow any Soviet missiles in Cuba, and decided Russia had the same right to refuse Ukraine entry into NATO. It is the West that set all the precedents. the problem is, Russia saw US and NATO military intervention in Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq again, Libya, Syria and the list goes on, so Russia just copied the precedent already set. When there was a "civil dispute" between Nazi Germany and its Jewish citizens, did anyone have the right to intervene militarily? yes, or no?

@AtheistEve Presumably you agree that USA should get out of Syria and all its military bases around the world closed down, I mean, it is pretty aggressive to set up a military base in someone else's country, right?

@AtheistEve Russia did offer safe refuge to ethnic Russians. I'm curious, does this "any civil war going on in .......should have had little to do with......" position apply to every conflict in the world, or just to this one? Syria? Serbia? Iraq? Afghanistan?

@AtheistEve so, you assume the UN and its courts understand the rights and wrongs of a dispute better than those involved? by what means would any UN court decision be enforced, given there is no UN police or army? how did the League of Nations do in handling the rise of Fascism? would you be absolutely fine if the UN court authorized Israel to annex Gaza? would Hamas accept such a court decision? are you 12 years old?

@a564-c3q Russia is not Moscow, just as Germany is not Berlin. Associating the history of a capital city with a nation and culture is childish. Russia has been where it is forever! Kievan Rus was part of Russia. The notion of "Ukraine" did not exist then, in fact the name Ukraine tells you that the area is on the edge, or borderlands of.....Russia! The correct plant analogy would be that the whole tree is Russia, and the seed of that tree has the name "Kievan Rus". "Ukraine" is just the name of the gardener who came along a lot later and never understood how the roots of the tree were so intertwined with the tree itself.

@AtheistEve just curious, offering safe refuge but no further involvement, the policy you believe Russia should have abided by, would you say that Hamas should do exactly the same, offer a refuge in Gaza for any Palestinians, but no involvement with Israel beyond that?

@AtheistEve when you say states should "stay within their own borders" does that mean their rockets, missiles and bombs should too? So, Hamas and Hezbollah should stop attacking Israel, agreed? And Ukraine needs to get out of Kursk, agreed? Also, what happens when there is a border dispute? Who gets to decide whether Crimea is Russian or Ukrainian? Let me guess, delegates from Bahamas and Burkina Faso in a UN back room?

@a564-c3q territorial integrity does not include the compelling of a separatist region to remain part of the mother country forever, otherwise International Law would forbid USA from having any right to have ever seceded from Great Britain.

@AtheistEve LOL. Hamas was not the aggressor with its Oct 7th attack and massacre? Ukraine was not the aggressor with its 8 years of shelling the citizens of Donetsk? Looks like the problem here is your upside down definition of "aggressor". Next you'll be saying that the Cubans were the aggressors at the Bay of Pigs!

@Igor100year_old What i said was 100% true. Soviet missiles were not permitted to remain in Cuba, and that situation set the precedent that the Superpowers can decide the limits of military installations in neighbouring countries.

So, once again, let me correct you, and yes, I have a degree in Russian and Russian Studies and know the history well. 1. You have no idea if the descendants of the founders of Kievan Rus are today in Ukraine, or Russia, or both, or neither. 2. Russia, like China, like Ireland, has existed forever. It is stupid to say that any one place existed before another. 3. "The people of Ukraine are closest to the roots" They are not. The people of Ukraine happen to live on the same land as the heart of Kievan Rus. So what? So do all the African students that went to Ukraine to study medicine. Does the fact that African students happen to be on the same land as Kievan Rus mean those African students are "closest to the roots"? You mistake geographical location for cultural lineage. Basic mistake. Are you 12 years old, by the way?
