the EU says it is ALWAYS open to asylum seekers! What changed? Suddenly the EU looks to deny basic human rights?
8
@LesleyDT6227 you only just noticed that? it's been that way since 2015.
7
@OilBaron100 why? either an asylum seeker has the right to apply for asylum in Finland or not. what difference does it make if Russia is helping that legal process?
5
@OilBaron100 makes no difference what the motive is. The EU either agrees to accept asylum applications on its border, or it doesn't. Let's hear the EU announce what its law says and that it will apply such law consistently everywhere. Why would a person's status to have refuge from persecution be 100% dependent on the perceived motive of a transit country? Either you care about the asylum seeker, or you don't. Which is it?

@zenon7094 Russia does not respect all human life, of course not. Russia is very good at ending the human lives of all those who think it is a really good idea to treat Russian speakers as second class citizens. Respect Russian citizens and Russian speakers, and Russia will respect you. Disrespect Russian speakers, and you will regret it, as the slow learners in Moldova, Chechnya, S Ossetia, Abkhazia and now Ukraine are learning.
3
Finland suddenly understanding that there were some major benefits to having good relations with Russia. Some people are slow learners.
3
so what? the asylum speakers pouring into UK are not French. what's your point?
3
So this is EU policy.....asylum seekers arriving in Lampedusa, accepted into the EU. asylum seekers arriving in Finland, rejected by the EU. am sure this all makes sense in Brussels.

@scrambledmandible it must be so hard for you, trying to figure out the Ukrainian situation without knowing a bloody thing about that part of the world. "thrown a coup"? you mean "staged a coup"? is English your third language? the only coup of any relevance is the 2014 one in Kiev, which was anti constitutional and promoted by the West. Crimea and Donbass were right to refuse to be part of such an undemocratic horror show. The list of countries I gave you were relevant because all had governments that tried to trample on Russian human rights, and Putin set them all straight. Don't be surprised if the nationalist fools in Riga go down the same path and will later be scratching their heads trying to figure out why Russian troops are pouring over the Latvian border in the vicinity of Daugavpils.

@ElusiveTy many a true word is said in sarcasm. that's how sarcasm works. Russians certainly respect human life a lot more than the maniacs in power in Kiev. Just a shame you are too blind to see that.
2
@ElusiveTy it is no more Russia's obligation to "look after them" than it is France's obligation to "look after" all the asylum seekers amassed in Calais. Of course such people aren't "supposed" to be choosing their country of asylum and trekking through many a transit country, but that is what the law allows! That is what the EU allows! Russia, having seen the foolishness of such EU laws, is doing us all a favor by highlighting such lunacy, so Finland must deal with it. or change the law!
2
Must be the Russians that blew up Nordstream then, even though Biden promised he would do so.
1
@schroedingers_atze a "weapon against you?" they are desperate human beings and Putin is merely helping them get to the safe spot they so desperately need, just like those generous NGOs in the Mediterranean. Either Finland welcomes asylum seekers, or it doesn't. Stop playing games, and decide, yes or no.
1
@miljdollarboy82 the border is not closed. by law Finland must keep one border crossing open, and so all the aspiring asylum seekers will flood to the one crossing forced to remain open by international law.
1
@kkiuoi it is irrelevant what you would want to do. it is only relevant what EU laws compel you to do. Until you grasp that fact, your blabber is of no importance.
1
@kkiuoi sadly, you have been misinformed. By law, Finland must maintain one border open to Russia for processing any asylum claims.
1
@kkiuoi It's an EU rule that, for humanitarian purposes, including for asylum seekers, at least one land border must be kept open to non EU countries. Finland is most definitely an EU country. So, by law, that Finland agreed to, it MUST keep at least one land border open to Russia, and that is what has happened. you are not the brightest, are you?
1
@myboysd5772 the problem is, Helsinki hasn't figured out who the real bully in all this is. Think Nordstream and Biden's promise to blow it up no matter what the world thinks.
1
so Russia is the villain for helping poor, persecuted asylum seekers reach their dream, the EU! seems like Russia is the one with a heart, assisting those in need, while the EU is heartless and playing politics.
1
@zenon7094 judging whether Russia has a heart or not by listing the military campaigns it has led is as infantile as saying Britain has no heart anymore....Balaclava, Ypres, Dardanelles, Zanzibar, Rorke's Drift, Dresden, El Alamein.
1
@OilBaron100 same reason the asylum seekers in France who want to come to the UK don't accept refuge in France, they don't want to and they don't have to, according to the law. Quite simple really.
1
@Tespri Russia has taken them in. They obviously have to be in Russia to then transit to Finland. The asylum seekers do not wish to stay in Russia, but claim asylum in the EU. Are you some kind of racist bigot that wants to ban asylum seekers from applying for asylum in the EU? As a humanitarian gesture, Russia is allowing the asylum seekers to transit Russia in order to get to the EU, which has laws in place to welcome such people. Change EU laws if you don't like the deal.
