Would that be due to Brexit too? Here in Barbate, Spain, tourist numbers are way down and business is sluggish. That must be due to Brexit, right? Economics is a remarkably complicated and multi-factorial business. Be damn sure the sole reason for any change is brexit legislation before you just assume it to be.

USA has federal laws and EU has EU-wide laws but the two only sometimes overlap. just one example, flying into any US state, passengers have to follow US federal laws, but flying into the EU passengers follow individual country's laws. it's all a bit of a mess.

@Mark-Haddow it is correct that NI is the region with steady growth (though all regions showed growth, albeit unsteady rather than steady) but that would be because NI has the enviable position of being able to choose between goods and services flowing in from the EU AND most goods and services that come in from the UK which are NOT subject to EU scrutiny. Best of both worlds, which we free marketeers preach non stop. Since you are not in Spain and have no idea of day by day comparisons between the EU and UK, can I ask you to keep your lying to matters related to your area of interest.

@dirkdupont5004 one advantage of Brexit? the UK can now, if it so wants, demand a visa of the hordes of Bulgarian and Romanian crooks, thieves and drug dealers that used to flood in due to the EU "freedom of movement". it may be too late, but the UK now can determine who has what rights to enter the UK, and who doesn't. It was always absurd that Bulgarians and Romanians could just arrive in the UK with freedom of movement, but those culturally much closer to the British, say the Australians and Kiwis, had greater restrictions placed on their entry and right to work here. I mean I have a massive list of advantages if you want to educate yourself! Up for a week long reading list?

It's just that, funny as it sounds, given the choice of living in a neighborhood riven with Romanian drug gangs or living in a neighborhood free of Romanian drug gangs, they would prefer the latter. 5) the only poll that matters is the one that delivered Brexit (and we were all told before the vote that Remain was ahead and going to win). You will find that as the EU collapses, more and more countries will want to jump off the sinking EU ship.

@Pronto yes, each country has to live with its choices, and while fools look at GDP as some kind of indicator of economic might, the wise look at exports and global demand for exports as a more accurate measure. Italy has a higher GDP than Russia, but no one cares a jot what Italy does on the world stage because Italian exports are of no great importance. Russia exports what all the world needs, and so the world does pay attention to what Russia does.

@dirkdupont5004 an instant removal of all trade barriers would indeed be a disaster. that's why no one advocates for that. the free trade argument states that the fewer restrictions placed on trade, the better, for all parties. Free from Brussels' diktats, the UK is now in a position to gradually work on , step by step, reducing trade barriers between itself and all partners...bit like arms reductions, it's done step by step. The EU cartel never showed any willingness to open up for free trade with the rest of the planet. The UK now has the choice to do so, or not, depending on what policy Westminster (not Brussels) decides.

@usercoimbar Chilean wines are a niche market in the EU only because they have to compete with EU wines that are free from tariffs. If the EU admitted Chile into its single market and customs union, chilean wines would cease to be niche and would compete on an equal footing. lower production costs would more than compensate for the transportation costs and Chilean wines would be cheaper than EU wines, but of course such a benefit to the EU consumer would never be allowed by Brussels

@usercoimbar No, I don't believe ALL young Remoaners will switch to being older Brexiteers, but ENOUGH will switch to make it a 50-50 contest. We were told on polling day that the opinion polls showed Remain would win, so, no, I don't believe the opinion polls reflect what would happen in a real referendum. I do suspect that the calamity that has happened in UK means the Remoaner-loving media would convince millions that Brexit is to blame, but whether that would mean enough of a swing to win a referendum, I'm not so sure. And yes, finally a point we can agree on, that the Overton Window keeps shifting to the Liberal side, so true Conservatism is dying fast. Explains why people like me feel more at home in Conservative societies like Mexico than in Western Europe. Maybe Serbia or Hungary would be best for me while in Europe.

Amazing how a rebound from covid can be both the cause of a boost in UK exports AND yet a collapse of EU exports! You don't think the rise in production costs in the EU due to the dumb decision to sanction Russia has anything to do with it? I don't dispute the UK's economic malaise and poor performance. I dispute the cause of it being Brexit. If Brexit were the main cause, we would expect to see a completely different economic picture in the EU. and we don't.

What went wrong, do you think, with the EU's safeguard on corruption that led to Qatargate? Non EU countries also have health and safety standards. They are not unique to the EU, though I would say what is unique to the EU is how their standards strangle business, resulting in the high levels of unemployment you see in countries like Spain and Greece.

I am merely pointing out that it is an EU decision to restrict UK employment in the EU, not a British decision. This is how gangs work. No one is arguing that France is obligated to take any immigrants back. I am arguing that once illegal immigrants are on French soil, France is responsible for them. Simple as that. Yes, the UK economy is in an awful state. Has nothing to do with Brexit, just as the awful state of the EU economy has nothing to do with Brexit. Brexiteers are, by and large, open to EU goods entering the UK free of customs and border controls. it is the EU cartel that can't bear the thought of EU consumers getting a better deal by having goods sold at lower prices coming in from UK.

@TheArneschwindt I think whenever a country is vaccinating its people ahead of any other country it is a massive help! No surprise that UK had awful numbers of covid deaths. Have you seen the UK population of late? old and obese to a shocking degree. The numbers would have been even worse without the Brexit head start on vaccines. Pros and cons of Brexit will be seen later. For now I am happy all the bad decisions that affect the country will be made in Westminster and not Brussels. We'll see how things turn out! @dregen8662 it has nothing to do with the quantity of bananas produced in the EU. it has a lot to do with the labour costs. so, you answered your own question. why would Brexiteers turn their backs on the EU's single market? because so many products can be obtained from around the world at much better prices. not difficult to understand, is it?

@dregen8662 keep in mind a lot of EU citizens hate the EU Single Market too. Just watch all the Spanish and French pour over the border from Andorra with their cars full of shopping, and the EU Customs officers desperately searching to try and deny EU citizens savings on key products. Such a wonderful economic paradise, the EU.

@dregen8662 as I said, celebrating at not having to pay a customs fee is like getting a massive restaurant bill, but celebrating not having to pay a service charge in a restaurant. the total you pay is all that matters. what % is a customs charge is irrelevant. at least with Brexit the UK is free to determine what customs duty is to be levied on imports from USA. such a freedom is denied EU member states....your dictators in Brussels command what you must pay.
