@pechudin9086 one of the great unknowns in all this is accurate numbers on the kill rate etc. My gut feeling is that Ukraine has had staggering losses, but not Russia.

nonsense. The Kremlin showed the discussion between Putin and Shoigu in which it was decided to withdraw Russian forces to east of the Dnipro. there was never any talk of anything being "stopped on day one". on the contrary, Kherson west of the Dnipro was handed over on day one.

@pechudin9086 so your gut feeling is that Russia, firing shells, missiles, rockets at 7:1 the Ukrainian rate, even by Ukrainian admission, is suffering much heavier casualties?

@claudemaggard7162 doesn't depend on Russian soldiers. Depends on Western taxpayers. When the West is fed up of paying for this futility, it's over and Russia wins. We already see signs that the voters in the West are getting fed up of this proxy war. with every passing day, Russia is a step closer to victory.

@_Twink obviously, there is no point in me reading any of the other articles you mentioned. if your reading ability is such that "fighting on the Western fringes of Bakhmut" claimed by a Ukrainian propagandist = "the confirmed recapture of Western Bakhmut" in your mind, it would be waste of time looking through the other garbage articles you mentioned.

"unable to verify this claim" obviously only applies to what Russia says. Anything that Ukraine claims is accepted as truth by DW and their propagandists. so, success for Ukraine will be capturing some territory, maybe a city or two, in this offensive. at what price? re capturing Severodonetsk would be worth what? 10,000 cannon fodder? 20,000? what's your number, Frank?

Russia is winning on all fronts. now, interesting you are prepared to speak for all taxpayers in all Western countries. define "anytime soon". at what point of Ukraine getting nowhere near Crimea nor ousting Russia from Donbass do you think the taxpayers of, say, Germany start demanding peace talks and no more massacres and no more weapons sent to Kiev?

@_Twink as suspected, your reading comprehension skills are awful. there is NOTHING in the PBS article that mentions any recapturing of West Bakhmut. On the contrary, one Western official spoke of the difficulty of Russia holding control of Bakhmut, which means Russia is in control of Bakhmut. the only mention of "west" is a propagandist from the Ukraine government CLAIMING there is fighting on the Western fringes of Bakhmut. Even that lying pawn says nothing about anything being recaptured! you are a useless reader. no wonder you are a deluded sheep.

@_Twink you write as if you assume that taking Bakhmut was some kind of priority! Funny. West Bakhmut was retaken by the Ukronazis? yeah? when was the last video you saw of Ukrainians in Bakhmut? Russia never mentioned a winter offensive. Russia doesn't need an offensive. Russia is fighting a war of attrition. so cute you cough up Western lies and talking points with such conviction!
