"steady gains" are just for the Western media. sane people are not fooled by it. the few villages and a pig farm gained by the Ukrainian cannon fodder were in the unoccupied gray zone, below a range of hills, so Ukraine sold the West the idea they had gained something (after losing 7000 men over 12 days) only for Russia to be more than happy to now shower those villages with artillery from on high. Russia is winning.
