@Ryanowning market forces are timeless, but international sanctions are a relatively new measure, and globalism has blunted their effects particularly since the rise of BRICS.

it's an absolute pleasure to watch the Zelensky Ukronazi shills, DW, flounder around in search for an explanation as to why Russia is surviving in such great shape compared to the ever sinking Western economies. Two years into this conflict and DW STILL can't find an expert to explain it all.

@hoolio5659 not true. the sanctions were implemented to cripple the Russian economy to the point that Russia would be unable to finance a war. not to inhibit it, but to crush it, hence the pathetic Biden boast of "the ruble has become rubble" and the desperate arm twisting by the West of China and India to stop trading with Russia. it all failed.

@famousmwofficial8046 correct, though some would say the Russian economy is expanding BECAUSE of sanctions, as inward investment in Russian firms goes up, while Russians spend no more money on Starbucks and McDonalds etc.

@BojanPeric-kq9et so, you are struggling with the correct English terms, which is understandable, as English is not your first language. instead of "international" you mean "pan national". yes, I have heard of the UN. It is an international organization. South Africa doesn't need to follow EU or US sanctions, but whether South Africa SHOULD follow such sanctions is another question. South Africa has to weigh up the consequences of NOT following such sanctions. The EU and US are bully boys that LOVE to threaten sanctions and measures against those who do not comply with their edicts. Good luck improving your English comprehension skills and your understanding of how the world works.

@McbrideStudios sanctions certainly work on ruining the economies of those who impose them! Look at the recession hit countries of the West, compared to the expected growth of the economy of Russia! the aim of the sanctions was to so cripple the economy of Russia that Russia would be unable to pursue war against Ukraine. Has that happened, yes or no?

@teehasheestower not entirely true. the EU can commit all its troops to the battlefield to join the Ukrainians shoulder to shoulder, but the EU prefers the Ukrainians do all the dying while the EU promises to deliver weapons and funds, and then fails to do so in the quantity necessary to win. Some of us believe the EU economies are so fragile that they can't even enforce their own sanctions, and have no interest in enforcing their own sanctions, hence Russian oil goes to India, gets blended with oil from non sanctioned countries, gets imported to EU as non Russian oil, and everyone is happy!

@teehasheestower the EU as an entity having no standing army doesn't prevent EU nations agreeing with each other to send their national forces into Ukraine. Stop hiding behind excuses for why the EU nations have all refused to help their dear Ukrainian brothers actually fight this conflict.

@VVayVVard how would you enforce limiting trade with anyone given globalism means goods and services flow pretty much unrestricted from place to place? let's say you know the UAE is acting as an "intermediary", so you restrict trade with the UAE. what stops the UAE using an intermediary? the logical conclusion to all this is all trade with all nations ceases! it's bonkers.

@VVayVVard what a company is allowed to do, and what a company can in fact do to skirt these absurd restrictions are 2 completely different matters. you are fixated on written words, laws, but the point is that with globalism, none of these laws or restrictions can be policed, at all. let's take any example. let's say my company is banned from exporting to Russia, but not to Hungary. how you gonna ban my product going to Hungary and thence on to Russia?

@teehasheestower ok, sure, then the EU cannot send military forces into Ukraine, but any and all individual EU nations can. so, I'll rephrase my point. EU nations on an individual basis can send their forces into Ukraine at any time, or EU nations can form a military alliance with each other to form a force to fight alongside Ukrainians, but they can't and won't, because they have no guts to die alongside Ukrainians, just the wish to be seen to be virtuous and supportive with billions of EU taxpayers' money.

@BojanPeric-kq9et "inter" comes from Latin, and simple means "among" or "between", so, for example, France v Spain is an international football match, as it is between 2 nations. so, the term "inter" requires just TWO participants minimum. TWO is not the same concept as ALL, is it, child?

@VVayVVard there is no company that is restricted from sending more than X units of their product outside the country. if there is, name the company! there are only restrictions on sending more than X units, or any units, to sanctioned countries. try again.

@VVayVVard there is no confusion on my part. you keep talking about "restricting trade" and I keep telling you that restricting trade by decree doesn't work! only a confused person would talk about laws to restrict exports! such laws don't exist! ONLY laws banning exports to sanctioned countries, but such laws are always circumvented! why do you think Russian oil continues to pour into the EU despite the sanctions?

@VVayVVard this is quite simple. there are no laws, past or present, that can impose effective sanctions on a place like Russia. the laws are just words. the laws are not policed, implemented or monitored, and they are circumvented with ease. once you have grasped this very simple notion you will understand why the Russian economy is doing so well BECAUSE of the sanctions, and why Europe is in such bad shape.

Back to the issues in hand. This debate was all about the effectiveness of sanctions. on a country like Russia, sanctions don't work, and, on the contrary, they lead to a boost in the economy of the sanctioned country, a decline in the economies of those imposing sanctions, and the sanctions are easily circumvented....Russian oil pouring into the EU all the evidence you need.
