it's called the free market. stop whining and crying for government intervention for every life problem that pops up.

just hilarious how foreign tourists are blamed for everything. fine, go ahead and ban AirBnB, let the tourist revenue go to other places, you'll still have the same problem of illegal squatter camps and rampant inflation. Deregulating the bureaucratic rental market would help, but no one wants market forces to solve the issue.

@onlyfacts3178 false choice. the market isn't JUST foreigners buying a house in Portugal and locals not affording a house in Portugal. If government moves out of the way, the market will attract constructors and investors to build properties for rent, for locals, or anyone. If no one in Portugal can afford the market price for rentals or for buying, the Portuguese need to look at their own government and ask what it is the government has done to destroy the market.

this problem will continue as long as fools think housing is some kind of obligation on the state.

@shanon72327 why? why is speculating with houses so wrong? or is all speculating (buying low with the hope of selling high) wrong?
1
Abbey Dunne it's rent controls that are causing the problem! give landlords the freedom to charge market prices and de-regulate the business and the market will solve the problem

@onlyfacts3178 the problem here is the government imposition of nonsense rules on capitalism

@ubcphysicsyangbo why is speculating (buying low in the expectation of selling high) wrong? a market trader who buys a chicken for 3 euros, speculating he can roast it and sell it for 8 euros at the market is doing something wrong?

the usual run and cry to government to enforce a solution, that won't work! let the free market establish the price of property. If only foreigners can afford property in Hawaii, time for Hawaiians to ask what has gone wrong at home, so that locals are too poor to compete with rich foreigners. sounds like Hawaii is in bad shape. Let me guess, a Democrat controlled state?

@anibalfernando3027 yep, UK has some specific problems. ever increasing population, mainly from migration, plus no incentives for landlords to rent accommodation = acute housing shortage. Only 2 solutions. stop the population increase (immigration) or allow massive construction projects to take over the countryside.
