Comments by "Nick Danger" (@nickdanger3802) on "Why didn't the Germans just send up all their interceptors to stop the thousand bomber raids?" video.
@normanacree1635 As I understand it Bomber Command used Mossys for decoy raids. They would have had to mimic heavys until they were near the city they wanted the LW diverted to then they could use their speed to exit. First RAF raid on Peenemunde for ex.

How is a "bomber stream" also a "formation" ?

IMHO, correct on the last count. However, heavy's were primarily for strategic bombing and Bomber Command and 8th AF were against using them for tactical missions.

They were not "liberating" Germany.

@mvfc7637 As I understand it the Med was closed to transit from June 1940 to mid 1943 requiring shipping to go around Africa, a fairly lengthy detour.

The objective of the Pointblank Directive was for Bomber Command and 8th and 15th AF (Italy) to eliminate the Luftwaffe as a threat to D Day. Harris bombed Berlin and left it to the USAAF. As I understand it.

"but rather to draw up the Luftwaffe to destroy them." As I understand it. That happened as a result of the Pointblank directive. Bomber Command did little flying in formation. From the switch to night in 42 to mid 43 bomber pilots could pick their own routes and alt and had to be over the target at a specific time and alt. From mid 43 to mid 44 they flew Bomber Stream to overload the controllers of German night fighters (GCA, ground control approach). And collisions did happen. USAAF pilots trained for up to one year to fly in formations of up to 54 aircraft (see Combat Box). USAAF bombers required up to three hours of fuel to climb to alt and form up before crossing the coast and stayed in formation for as long as the aircraft and pilots could manage to do so until landing.

Ju87's were withdrawn from service in the West mid 43. Until Germany ran out of them mid 44, Hs123 open cockpit biplanes were still in service in the East. They were replaced with Ju87's. As I understand it.

From the USA, tankers were the primary focus of U boots.

Allied Bombers (Losses Over Germany And Western Europe) Volume 386: debated on Wednesday 20 January 1943 Mr. Stokes asked the Secretary of State for Air, how many Allied bombers were destroyed over Germany and Western Europe up to 31st December, 1941, and how many during the year ended 31st December, 1942? Sir A. Sinclair The number of Allied bomber aircraft operating from this country which were reported lost over Germany and Western Europe up to 31st December, 1941, was 1,242. The number in 1942 was 1,337.
