  1. I'd say if it advanced science at all then it was worth it, and from the sounds of things, it did and was. You bring up an interesting point about maintenance, and I wonder, why don't they build a giant telescope in space and man it with a small crew. One might suggest the ISS as a platform for a telescope, but I'm thinking farther out and with facilities to provide full time permanent habitation. Hydroponically grown vegetables and spinning segments for artificial gravity.
