I would argue that you should learn every language you can. Start simple, yes, C and assembly are both good choices, but keep learning as many as you can. However, that doesn't mean that they're all equally usable or good or that you should continue using them just because you know them. Only keep up so you can write code in them if called on to do it, but stick with C as your "daily driver". And char is short for character, so you shouldn't pronounce it like the word char even though they're spelled the same, like read and read.
