  3.  @Chris-on5bt  Right, so instead of returning a multitude of error codes so you can diagnose what went wrong, you get a useless boolean and have to do even more work. Worse yet, it slows everything down. The C method is better, you have a series of macros that define all the possible error conditions. So when something goes wrong and you check the return code, you know what went wrong instead of merely where.

It's because it's unconstitutional, and they know that it's unconstitutional, so they add an expiration date to pretend that they're not doing something unconstitutional and the "justice" system backs them up by pointing to the expiration date and saying "see, it's not permanent, so it's okay". Never mind that technically it's still illegal, as is hiring "private" contractors to break the law for them. There's only two possible outcomes, neither of which will be good for the people.

  5. I still play games like the original Unreal and many PS1 games as well like FFT and FF7. So the latest and greatest graphics don't sway me. I don't even have a discrete graphics card in my computer. Always been an onboard only kind of gamer. Two RPi's also. What I am excited about is Intel releasing a graphics card and the possibility with EVGA cutting ties with Nvidia that they might hopefully make boards for Intel and/or AMD.

  8. This is the take I was looking for but didn't get from the only other person I've seen covering this. I think they've made a lot of bad changes over the years, the dislike counter being one of the worst, but also for me the timestamp display is also a really bad one. To actually see when something was posted was the best, but now it's got to update a counter and that means you never see the real date unless you've just refreshed right as it has ticked over, and then you'll never know it. (Before anyone suggests it, downloading the JSON data for each video is too much effort and I should neither have to do that nor write any kind of plugin to handle it.)

  9.  @awesomeferret  Slander is a completely different matter. It should be reported when it actually is slander, but not everyone can correctly identify valid criticism versus outright abuse. I would say, if it looks like slander, inquire and if they confirm it by either saying yes or being abusive, then obviously report it. Although, even that isn't a foolproof method because some people are perpetually offended, so getting a secondary opinion from someone who's hard to offend would be best.

  12. I wonder how feasible it would be to have the community create an open search engine. All the infrastructure to handle search queries would be incredibly expensive, and you'd need more than a few programmers who actually understand whatever storage technology you use. The search algorithms really shouldn't need mentioning, but if I don't someone will probably point out the obvious. If we could find altruistic investors or get enough interest through crowdfunding, it might be possible.

It'll be convoluted code that looks worse than C and doesn't work any better or faster and provides none of the guarantees that it said it would which is a huge part of why it was being tried in the first place. Better to just stick with C and write cleaner code in the idiomatic C way. Also, don't fall into the trap of thinking your code is safe because you write it in X language of choice.

  15. Yeah, they definitely have the upper hand. They could even embed them directly into the video streams at random points and disable the feature of fast forwarding. That would essentially screw the downloaders too, and if it was truly random you'd have to use some NN algorithm to detect the ads for auto-deletion.

  16. This is why we needed physical copies of games, so they couldn't change it after the fact, unfortunately, those times are long gone. You might need some blackout curtains, that passing cloud causing the light to practically flare kind of obscured you. How they should've handled it, is instead of removing them, just make them invincible and have them completely ignore you in the game.

  18. This is why you should do your own taxes and send it through snail mail. Still can be compromised, but there's a lot more laws setup to protect the process and punish the guilty if that happens. Also, it's a shame that so many websites these days absolutely refuse to work without JavaScript enabled, and I'd love to run my own e-mail server if it weren't both a major pain in the ass to get setup and blocked by my ISP. Oh well, I'm thinking we should start our own internet and not let corporations control it.

  20. Good point. We'll have to see how things play out with any boards that come out specifically for these cards plus newer CPU's and RAM. This is one of those reasons why I don't bother with modern gaming. I paid $40 for FFT on the PS1 when it first came out and I've played it every year since. I'd say I got my moneys worth out of that purchase. I wonder how many times people have played through CyberPunk and how long they'll keep coming back.

  22. Don't worry. The brainpower of most Rustaceans couldn't power an Arduino, let alone will they take over and make knowledge of C++ outdated. Besides, C++ is being updated continually and you should really look into some of the features from C++ 11, 17 and 20.

  23. I couldn't get the video to play through the browser at all, just more FF bashing by YT as they still refuse to let me have 1080p. Chromium based browsers on the other hand get all kinds of options and no other site seems to treat FF like a second class citizen. In other words, I haven't found a single other site that has 1080p and prevents me from selecting that option.

  24. I wish someone would make a giant SD card and reader so we could have something akin to floppy disks again. Something about sliding a disk into your computer and hearing that distinctive click just gives me a cheap thrill.

  25.  @SuzukiJim  You don't have to buy them, you could make them from melted down aluminum cans. Make a Gingery lathe or mill and it's practically free. A lathe would be easier and is perfectly capable of making the majority of parts while still taking up less space. Shallow depth of working area but wider base, and you could replace your TV and the stand it's on and it's the same footprint. A welder can be made from a broken microwave and takes up even less space than the microwave does.

  28. I'll say this here because I know no one will read it, but privacy is a human right. Private ownership is a human right. The right to live is a human right. The right to work without your effort being stolen by corrupt pieces of shit who waste it on studies of the mating habits of ground squirrels is a human right. Okay, that last one got a tad specific, but it still pisses me off that my tax dollars are wasted on such garbage and I can't ask for a refund for what I never asked for in the first place from people who stole my money and wasted it. Taxation is theft, and when it's acceptable is when it's actually used for the greater good and not as a punishment for living. The money I earn gets taxed just for it being income, then if I invest it the interest is taxed, and if I buy something with it that is taxed, and if I sell it that is taxed and if I try to give it to my children when I die it gets taxed. If it's land and it's just sitting there it gets taxed, and if I want to build a house on it it has to be approved by some government stooge, and if I ignore them they'll tear it down at my expense and maybe steal the land from me too. I'm sick of it, and our forefathers would be ashamed that we continue to let this theft grow so out of control.

  30.  @yungmang  Each program has to handle that itself. They turn off shell echoing of input before requesting the password. The easiest way is to just use a library like ncurses or readline and let it figure out the platform specific details, but if the terminal you're using supports escape sequences and you know them, you can do it entirely manually.

And there's always the DIY method for those like me who could and would if all else fails. There are various RPi projects to make your own phone.

  39. Most users don't have the time to sit and read a 2000 page document that says somewhere around page 1573 that they steal all your data. It's unrealistic to expect that non-technical users will ever understand what's going on in their computer. However, I would recommend that if anyone doesn't like their data to be stolen that they should use Linux instead.

  40.  @tone6410  Yep, pretty much what I'm saying. The only way to be sure your data won't be stolen is to use software that you can audit the source of. It's not a guarantee even then because you have to actually audit it or trust those that do, but it's better than any of the big three closed source software companies. The weird thing is, all three have contributed to various open source projects, yet they refuse to open their OS's completely. That's their right, fine, but I won't use them.

  42.  @Ligands23  If everyone decided to leave Windows en masse, then they could effect real change in the industry and either Microsoft would slightly change their evil ways to retain customers or they'd die. And if you really feel it's necessary to pay someone for the OS you use, whether you realize you're doing it or not you certainly are paying for Windows, then you could find a developer working on some open source project and donate a dollar as well as convince all your friends to do the same. If just 0.0014% of the population of the planet donated a dollar, 1 or 2 developers could be paid for an entire year of development time, depending on how much they spend to live. Don't like something about it? Pay someone to bend it to your whims. If anyone bothers to ask, there are companies that actively pay developers to work on open source projects, even the kernel itself has developers that are paid just to develop for the kernel. While most developers donate their time, they'd have a lot more of it to devote towards open source development if people donated money. A lot of people complain about the user interface of various programs, but if there's no one being paid to work on it and the people who are working on a project are focused on making the core functionality work, how can you expect it to get done. In short, donate to open source and it'll get better.

  43. If you're open to editing the list, I'd say erase Python and Rust from it. Real programmers use assembly, C, sometimes C++ if they're in a mood and of course butterflies to control the radiation hitting the hard drive's platters.

  45.  @pmester228  It'll be a while yet before we're no longer allowed to buy batteries and fuel, but there are more maintenance friendly methods for doing things. For instance, an electric motor is easy to build yourself and if you need to repair one you can store the supplies to create your own magnets and literal tons of copper wire. You can use a gear reduction setup to enable gravity batteries. A motor pulls a heavy weight high into the air while power is available, or possibly you do it yourself with an incline and a sled, then drop it off of the top and it generates electricity as it falls slowly throughout the day. You can even bulk buy Pb and H2SO4 to make your own chemical batteries. Wind generators are even more DIY friendly than solar if you need an easy power source and live somewhere windy. And if push comes to shove, you can always hook a motor to a bicycle and generate your own electricity from your own physical energy.
