They already smear my browser by restricting it to 720p, and I refuse to use anything Chromium based, especially now with the manifest v3 fiasco, but they've started going around my ad blocker and playing the sound of ads. Apparently the image of the videos are blocked, but the sound comes through. What makes it worse is they took away a key usage methodology for me to load the page in the background to block autoplay which I have turned off and they still ignore if that page is in focus, but now with ads I literally can't block autoplay ever. TL;DR - Fuck YouTube.

Yeah, they definitely have the upper hand. They could even embed them directly into the video streams at random points and disable the feature of fast forwarding. That would essentially screw the downloaders too, and if it was truly random you'd have to use some NN algorithm to detect the ads for auto-deletion.

@TeodorLojewski No, it wouldn't cost them any extra.

@gd44481 They already have the infrastructure setup to encode every video, and they do on a regular basis. How do you think a person can upload one file and every conceivable format and quality is available? Inserting ads would actually be a simple addition to the process and for a company that literally employs thousands of programmers it'd be done in 5 minutes.

@michael_c2 I think you overestimate the amount of time it takes to actually do it. Once all the various formats are encoded, which can be done for the ads as well, inserting them at random points is an incredibly simple matter. Choosing which ads to insert based on the algorithm is equally as easy. They could literally insert them at random points on demand for each user. As in you press play, the ads are already there. Refresh the page, the ads are there again but at a new location and even a new ad.
