Maybe it's because I live in a hot state or because I'm hot blooded, but I'd rather have the thermostat a little higher. I set mine at 78F and I feel great. That said, even if the company set mine exactly where I like it, I still wouldn't cede control to them. I'd rather sink $100K into buying solar panels and going fully off grid than let them control anything I own.

@pmester228 It'll be a while yet before we're no longer allowed to buy batteries and fuel, but there are more maintenance friendly methods for doing things. For instance, an electric motor is easy to build yourself and if you need to repair one you can store the supplies to create your own magnets and literal tons of copper wire. You can use a gear reduction setup to enable gravity batteries. A motor pulls a heavy weight high into the air while power is available, or possibly you do it yourself with an incline and a sled, then drop it off of the top and it generates electricity as it falls slowly throughout the day. You can even bulk buy Pb and H2SO4 to make your own chemical batteries. Wind generators are even more DIY friendly than solar if you need an easy power source and live somewhere windy. And if push comes to shove, you can always hook a motor to a bicycle and generate your own electricity from your own physical energy.

@hedgehogdinosaur3023 Good cooler in your PC then?

@crazycoffee Are you thinking there's a conspiracy there? Or that people just behaved differently then?

@pmester228 Heating and cooling can mostly be done passively. And if you do things right you don't need a lot of electricity to run anything. Although, in a hypothetical future where you need to live off grid, you probably won't have a computer anyway, regardless of its power consumption.

@stevej71393 Yep, that's science. The air blowing over you will carry the heat away and cool you down. Eventually you'll be lacking enough heat to make yourself comfortable being in a confined and air conditioned space. Your body will compensate for that, and if you keep yourself slightly chilly you'll burn more fat.

@imzjustplayin I think you might have missed the point. I know it doesn't cost $100k for solar panels, not even to power several homes. It was an exaggerated amount for the purposes of illustrating the point.
