  3. Yes, and often bought all the computers that the school would have. In some instances it would be manufacturers who would use it as a tax write-off and were paid by Microsoft for exclusivity anyway. It's a monopoly really, but our government isn't doing their job, and hasn't for a long time, by filing antitrust suits.

  4. I'm not sure if you were lucky or unlucky to grow up when you did, but when I was in school and we first got computers, they all ran DOS. It wasn't until I was in high school that they "updated" to Windows on all the computers, and it was WinNT 4.0 which I actually helped setup the whole network because of the class I was taking that year. It should've been instructive, but they were really just using us kids to do their work for them and we really only learned the sequence of operations to set it up with Windows. I only ever used WordPad as a means of generating .rtf files and I don't know if it could even open standard Word documents at that time. Of course, I was also on my very own transition to using Linux and my experiences with NT convinced me that Linux was the better option and everyone would be using it in the future. Well, we're getting there, as nearly every server uses it and nearly every cell phone uses either it or some flavor of UNIX in the form of iOS, but adoption is taking so very long.
