@walkman1269 It would probably make the transition easier for Windows users to try using open source programs on Windows first, and then once they've changed their entire workflow to then switch to Linux. LibreOffice may not be entirely compatible, and that's by Microsoft's design, but most things will work and I hate to say it, but exporting to PDF is the best way to share documents with Windows users. If you use Photoshop, then try GIMP, but obviously don't uninstall Photoshop, use them side by side. Learn the ins and outs of each. Do this for everything you can and eventually you'll be ready while not having thrown yourself in the deep end.

@walkman1269 And I'm guessing these proprietary utilities don't run under WINE? Probably even require special drivers?

I remember back in the Win98 days that a friend of mine had this wizardry that was a Live CD running Windows. It was next to impossible for someone to set something like that up back then, it probably is impossible now. And then I found Knoppix and that many distros provided them so you could install Linux with a full GUI environment. Now days it's even easier to make your own custom Live CD than ever. Things haven't changed a great deal over the past 20 years except that better driver support and ease of use improvements have taken place on the Linux side, while Windows has only gotten more bloated, slow, and full of default installed spyware.

It's not that their policy is hostile towards it or you, but rather the patent system is and the "owners" of the patents are. Also, you say that you've only reinstalled Windows once in 20 years, but I bet you're not still using Win98. If you've got Windows installed and install a newer version, that still counts as a reinstall. If you install Linux and then install Windows over it, that too counts as a reinstall. Of course, if you dual booted, you shouldn't have to reinstall either.

@lukashavel7690 For Vivaldi, that may be a licensing issue, in which case it would be on them not Fedora, as it is in the case of patented algorithms. As for reinstallation, I'll let that slide, since you probably never installed it on your own anyway. Though I am curious why you don't find the updates that interrupt your work to be more annoying than switching to something more free.

@lukashavel7690 You've been pretty lucky then, because everyone I've ever talked to has had enormous problems with Windows. Whether that be missing drivers, which you seem to think can't ever happen, or whether that's updates that interrupt their work because Microsoft decided you need to update even if you told it no. The only people I hear about having problems with Linux tend to be those that have an irrational hatred for it and want to have problems so they can stay with the familiar Windows.

@AxWarhawk I don't think there's going to be any problems with Qt. I can't recall ever seeing forks of it, either. As long as I've been using it, the biggest change was probably with Plasma, but it wasn't something that just killed every prior app and as far as I'm aware, TrollTech tries to maintain a lot of backwards compatibility with Qt. (Note: They've actually changed their company name, but it was TrollTech for so long that I'm just going to keep calling them that. Now they're actually called "The Qt Company".)

I don't know why that would be the case. By default, if you use KDE, and most newbies will, Dolphin opens with WinKey+E like explorer does on Windows. Right clicking and selecting "Create New" then "Text File" is more than close enough to how Windows does it.

@juanzubieta5080 I don't even have a Templates folder. I deleted it myself because I didn't use it. I still see multiple files listed in the "Create New" menu. However, that's an XDG thing, not strictly KDE. I used KDE as an example because most new users will use it, but other DE's have the same functionality. You mention Mint, which uses Cinnamon by default, last I checked, and that is based on Gnome. So if it has it, then Gnome does too, which covers the two biggest DE's that people will use, whether a new user or not. And in case you ask, I just checked if the functionality still works despite not having a Templates folder and yep, it sure does.

Right click the AppImage and select Properties at the bottom, then the Permissions tab and make sure the "Is executable" check mark is checked. Then you should be able to double click it. I actually had to look this up myself because I almost never use Dolphin to navigate to and execute programs. At some point you might also want to learn how to add entries to the taskbar menu. If you right click the task menu button and select "Edit Applications..." you can add any programs you install manually.

It's a nice dream, but they have too much fear of their monopoly on an overpriced subscription disappearing because people find the completely free alternatives too alluring. Businesses would just stick with what they already have and with where it works best, and you know Adobe would make it work best on Windows. I think the best way to push people to Linux would be to get them to use the open source alternatives while they're still on Windows. If they can get used to the different ways they work, switching wouldn't be so hard.

@Moister356 I was sort of that person years ago. I didn't use Photoshop, but I did use GIMP on Win98 so I could edit various images. I even used Star Office for a short time before it became Open Office. Now I use Libre Office, but they're not hugely different. I think using a lot of OSS on Windows is what made the transition to Linux so much easier.

True, although I wonder how long we'll have any of the FireFox forks because of how much effort it takes to maintain security parity with the main branch. I keep hoping that either 1) we'll get a new browser that's not based on Chromium or FireFox or B) that the entire internet will be restructured and moved away from the garbage that is HTML/CSS/JS. Both are equally likely to happen, and if the second one happens then they both undoubtedly will, but I'll never stop hoping. You know, because neither will happen. That's why I won't stop hoping.

@IsmailofeRegime You can thank XDG for that folder layout. When I started using Linux none of those were created by default. Although, I think Linux probably got them before Windows did, as Microsoft has copied pretty much everything from somewhere else. Now days it's even easy to read and write NTFS partitions from Linux. For me, I used a lot of ports of open source programs when I was still using Windows, and since I spent a lot of time in a terminal already, it was an easy transition. That's not to say it was flawless, nor is that to say that I had to use the terminal, just that that's where I was regularly spending time even on Windows anyway.
