  1. One would hope that the maintainers of the repository would check these things for you. Consider that if it's in source form, you have to check potentially millions of lines of code as well as the installer script. If it's in binary form, you have to hope that someone trustworthy made it from a stock copy of the source and didn't add their own twist, as well as that they didn't modify the binary after building it. The ideal scenario would be if the repository maintainers built everything themselves or at least audited all the source code and hosted it all themselves.
