I have a similar story to yours, except that it was Win98 that pushed me onto Linux full-time, and I actually did learn how to do things with computers in my computer classes. When we learned about DOS, we even learned how to do low level formatting, and let me tell you, without a UPS, that is a scary thing to attempt. I still remember how the typing program we used was setup by our evil teacher to beep super loud if you used the backspace key. Mistakes were not tolerated and that was probably one of the worst ways to learn how to type. I've been using LibreOffice since it was StarOffice and they first offered it for free on x86 systems. I've even got a copy of Solaris for x86 somewhere. I've used CygWin and MingW and even individual native builds of many *nix programs back on Win98, and all of these made it a lot easier to transition. Although, I'm a Vim user, so we could probably never be friends IRL since you're an Emacs user.
