Yep, we all have our different ways of learning things. The only wrong way is the way in which you give up and don't learn.

First, that's an elitist attitude. Second, I refuse to include GNU when referring to Linux, multiple distributions exist that do not use GNU and if you use LFS you can swap out GNU components. Third, LFS isn't a distribution, it's a guide book. If you haven't seen it, watch Rob Landley's talk on building the simplest possible Linux system.

My favorite line from that guy's rant, "the video is still relevant, BTW". Personally, if someone is new to Linux, I recommend Mint or Fedora. If they've got some experience and want the best out of Linux, then I say Slackware. Maybe Arch is great, I don't know, but too many elitists have turned me away from even wanting to try it, and I've been using Slackware for 25-ish years or so and it's never steered me wrong.
