It already is a full blown programming language that people write whole apps to run in the web browser with. Some people even write whole apps that run outside of the browser using various runtimes. It was never intended for that and shouldn't be used for that now, but it won't stop people from doing such crazy things. It's like the various kernel projects that have been started over the years in languages ranging from BASIC to Java. Inappropriate isn't in some people's vocabulary.

@samuelmorkbednarzkepler Now you're just being obstinate. Replacing it would be easy from a technical standpoint. The only thing that's needed from a societal standpoint is for every webmaster to switch to an alternative. Just need one browser to enable that better option, remember VBScript and how it worked, then everyone would have a reason to switch. We already have alternatives getting pushed into the space, complete or not. Even an implementation of Lua would be better than JavaScript, but can you imagine if a new BASIC variant was created for web dev. That would be hilarious.

@FakeRyanGuild Funny, and while it could do with quite a few edits, I'll just point out one: s/rained/reigned/ .

@roccociccone597 In other words, use what's appropriate for the case. Of course, that won't stop people from doing what they want whether it fits or not, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone is working on or has already written a kernel in JavaScript. Believe it or not, someone actually wrote one in BASIC.

@samuelmorkbednarzkepler While it is currently the language of the web, it wasn't always, doesn't have to be, doesn't deserve to be, and most definitely should be replaced. Does anyone remember VBScript? How about Java applets? Yeah, both sucked, but we still shouldn't be using JavaScript.

@ArnoldsKtm A designation as a scripting language only pertains to how it runs. So unless the majority of users are compiling it to a native binary, it'll still be a scripting language. It's not a denigration to be labelled as such, it's merely what it is.
