  3. Peak performance is only better in long-running, poorly optimized codebases. Gcj isn't dead, it's just not actively being developed, and again I'll say that there are alternatives, of which Kotlin is a widely used example. Of course, the best advantage in any codebase is having a competent developer.

  9. I feel like the Internet Archive is what the Library of Congress should be. While they preserve a lot of things, they mostly hide it away in their vaults or require a physical presence to make use of the materials. I know, copyright law, but there should be some allowances made for the LoC. I don't know if they preserve websites either, and that's one of the most important things that the IA does which I also use them for. Although, I personally feel like our copyright law should go back to being 14 years. If that was the limit, then things would make more sense and the IA could distribute anything that was 14 years and older without any worry. For that matter, so could the LoC.

At most a couple of hundred people could accomplish it, but that's only for providing the infrastructure and only if it's decentralized. If it's centralized, it'll cost millions of dollars, but then you don't even need a dozen. A little of both and it wouldn't be terribly difficult. Just needs good programmers and people willing to put in the work. As far as restrictions, if I were running it, I'd only ban spam and scams and to make it easier on network activity I'd limit video to 1080p. Censoring people in what is effectively the public square is evil and if we correctly interpret the first amendment, then for any US company to do so is also illegal.

  21. Well, no. Rust isn't the closest thing we have to fixing memory safety because it's not even the biggest problem. For starters, the study that MS published was their invalid assessment of their own software, not software in general which they couldn't do because they don't possess the source code to every piece of software. For seconds, better programmers is the only valid solution to the problem. If you write better code, you don't have problems. However, valgrind, compiler warnings and static analysis are good adjuncts to better programmers. No one is perfect, not even the Rust compiler or standard library developers. There have been real bugs that have been discovered that seemingly can't or won't be fixed which invalidates Rust's so-called memory safety. And in case you're curious, the biggest problem facing programmers is a lack of user input validation. Merely preventing out of bounds accesses in the simplest cases won't fix the lack of validation.

  22. It's a shame such software that I used as a "kid" can't be open sourced and toyed with today. I still say we need a massive reduction in copyright lifespan. Also, I really want to play the original Unreal as a native build on Linux. If our copyright law were still as our founding fathers designed it, then every bit of the original Unreal would no longer be under copyright.

  24. Yeah, we don't want to become that which we have fought against. The left jumps on any conspiracy theory that makes them feel warm and fuzzy, we should be better than them. Also, the myth about Ada Lovelace is especially irritating to me, because it's almost always parroted by an idiot who wants to use it for some female empowerment slogan. Taking away the accomplishments of others is not the correct way to empower people. Besides, there are plenty of women involved in computer science that they can and should look up to, there's no need to lie about who the first programmer is to inflate egos. I kind of feel the same way about the story on who coined the term open source. It feels like a glory grab to put down men.

  25. I haven't trusted Wikipedia on anything outside of the technical sphere for over a decade. It's been obvious that they've had severe left-wing bias for pretty much the entire time they've existed. Even things in the technical sphere have to be checked, and luckily for me, most of the technical information I glean from it can be checked by merely writing a program. If you need to use it for research of any kind, at most it should be a first stop and definitely should be quadruple checked against sources that don't cite WP. There's a circular dependency problem on WP wherein a journalist will create an article and cite WP while no such article exists or says something different and then WP editors will create or edit an article to back up the journalists and cite their article to "prove" the content on WP. It's rather disgusting and provably still happens all the time, yet leftists completely disregard the truth, so it gets ignored on the left, and people in the center who are ill-informed will fall for it every time.

  27. No disrespect to ESR, but I remember the term open source being prevalent before 1998. Ordinarily I wouldn't care but when someone tries to give credit to someone who doesn't deserve it because they've been infected with a leftist brainworm, I feel like someone needs to speak up. I've got some Linux distributions that are that old, I should look and see if there's some proof that they used that term in any of the pieces of documentation available. I suppose someone could look through .iso's on the internet archive too if they felt so inclined.

  29. Not every design decision requires absolute stringency. It's the equivalent of always checking bounds or always checking for a null pointer in internal code where the checks had already happened upon entrance to the library and no longer need the checks. Unfortunately, most compilers aren't capable of detecting when it isn't needed in heavily nested code and still require a programmer to know what they're doing and think about it properly and thus to give hints to the compiler.

I'm not even that big of a proponent of LaTeX, but you don't need to know and use every single construct available to make use of it, and even someone with a below average intelligence such as the two of you should recognize that fact. Personally, I hate the "Java mentality" that has become so pervasive in the industry and corroded the talents of most within the past 29 years. And were it not for his ardent support for a garbage documentation format and his utter ignorance of what plain text actually is, and your defense of him, I wouldn't suggested that you both could be reformed and made whole, but you have dissuaded me of that belief.

Now it's very few that are hired on merit because of quotas, which are themselves racist and sexist. Given that your post is edited I can't be sure if you meant "their" when referring to the community's repugnant ideologies or if you actually meant to call someone else's ideologies repugnant, but he's certainly not defending any repugnant ideologies. If you wish to make another edit and further clarify what you mean, make sure to respond to this and inform me of said edit.

  35.  @Spartan322  Strongly disagree. It's not difficult to context switch based on a token being a typename. It's mostly the same as using a keyword. Although, if your return type is a built-in type, then it already is a keyword and equivalent to that of using fn anyway, but without the redundancy. For a language that is dynamically typed, I'd say fine-ish, but even bash proves that's not necessary. You might want to argue that blocks of code could be analyzed differently if the compiler knows ahead of time that it constructs a function, but in a language like Rust where the last element of a block can just sit on its own, that removes one area of context sensitivity and places it elsewhere, and the compiler should know by the time it reaches the first brace that it's dealing with a function anyway, even in C.

  36.  @Spartan322  I definitely do understand, but I write my parsers and lexers from scratch. If you're using rigid compiler construction tools, then it's more difficult. Why don't you give it a try, write a compiler from scratch. Let's say an enhanced BF language, something with variables and functions, and translate it into C. Might be too simple of a task, but I think you'll find that it can be enjoyable writing code and writing it all by hand is far more fun and a lot easier to do. Then write a simple BASIC dialect, but give it an editor environment like a C64, and stay within the terminal the whole time. If by the time you're done you don't understand what I'm talking about, then it might be time to retire or change fields. You shouldn't waste your time doing things you don't enjoy and/or don't feel rewarded by accomplishing.

  38.  @Spartan322  I don't think C was particularly visually simple anyway. Even when functions took no arguments, whether in C or C++, I used void to indicate that. The current standard for C requires the use of the void keyword anyway. But for what it's worth, I define a type for function pointer arguments every time that I can, which is generally every time. It makes it significantly cleaner to read a function signature that way. When I write C++, I prefer to put a `using namespace std;` at the top. If I need to avoid a standard name, I'll use my own namespace or just change the name in some other way since I always put using clauses after includes and never in headers. Of course, since my own language has modules, I don't need half of the coping mechanisms that I use in either C or C++. I still don't understand language designers that love clutter. If I import a module I expect that module to be immediately usable, not indirectly usable through a namespace or some other garbage. This is one of the rare times that I would commend Python for how its imports work.

  39. I'm still using 2.10 on Slackware, and last time I was at my parents, I checked out what version Mint uses, and it's also 2.10, which I find absolutely weird. I never update, but I have their computer setup to do so and I would expect a more recent version with Mint. Maybe I'll get version 3.0 in a decade when Slackware 16 is released. :))

Of course, if you want to try and team up and fork the project, there are quite a few developers that aren't raging leftists. I'd love to fork X and fix the flaws in the design, but I'd not be able to keep calling it X. This is one of those things that makes forking extra difficult because widespread adoption is worse when you have to rename a project. I would consider the Wayland devs to be akin to terrorists in this regard because they're project squatting on X while developing its direct competitor. I figure a similar problem would occur with forking KDE, but I've never been a fan of the name and would gladly accept a change. That probably won't make sense to you, but it's sort of a non-linear thought I had with regards to the effort involved in forking any project that you want to take out of the hands of someone evil.

  43.  @phoneywheeze  The only way a system could work where the government does the verification is where you have an identifier that the website can check without giving the government any information other than that single identifier. A simple pass/fail where you're of age or you're not. However, we all know that it would be exploited by the government to gather even more information on the citizenry than they should have and I'd rather see no age verification at all, even with in-person purchases.

  44. I've said it before and I'll say it again and hopefully people that watch your videos will read the comment even if you don't, but part of the left's goal is to control the language we use. This is why the white house (no respect there, so no capitalization), has decided for us what programming languages we should use. This is why they redefine words over and over again and demand that we use whatever words they want us to use and none of the words they don't want us to use. This is why they rewrite history and use the short memories of normies to get away with it. What we really need is our own open source initiative. Something that is intentionally to the right, politically speaking. Not leaning, but just on the right. They should vet people based on their beliefs, just as the left does, and ensure that only people who support the rights of a baby to live once it has been created, that support the right of a person to carry a gun to protect themselves from enemies foreign and domestic, that protect children from groomers instead of mutilating their mind and body, and any other morals you can think of that the left considers optional, if not downright antithetical to their agenda of dominating humanity.

  45. That's silly. Everyone knows that the first computer bug was a lightning bug, sometimes referred to as a firefly. It took them so long to notice it because they thought the LED was blinking as it should and it was really a bug preventing them from knowing the machine wasn't working. Of course, LED's didn't exist when all this went down, so they were naturally confused about the whole process of debugging.

I've been using KDE nearly as long as it has existed, but I wouldn't contribute financially to them now that they're run by leftists. Eventually I'll have to either fork it or find a replacement that does everything I need because they're moving to Wayland only.

  50.  @gruntaxeman3740  I'll say it again, but you don't have to use the terminal for C. You can easily write GUI apps in C and I and many others have done so. Also, I've had my own library for string handling for decades and you really shouldn't used linked lists if you expect your code to be performant. Arrays use less memory and are significantly faster. If you truly require the order to be retained, then a sparse array is still a better option even if it's not quite as memory efficient. A lot of what you're complaining about tells me you're not very good at architecting and you're not up to date on your knowledge of C, nor of C++. YouTube seems to be shadowing more posts than usual under this video.
