@shade221 Linux is just a kernel. GNU software doesn't go into the kernel. So yeah, Android is a Linux distro.

@shade221 The very fact of it being Linux based makes it a Linux distro. Binary compatibility is iffy even from one Linux to another, but I've seen ChromeBooks that could natively run Linux apps. I don't know if they're doing something with emulation or using a WINE-like translation layer, but if they can run that's good enough and I don't care how they make it work.

We do have System76 and a few others here, but they're not used by a majority of computer users.

Yep, people get used to what they use and don't want to change. It's a huge part of why I'm still using KDE after 20+ years because I've gotten used to my workflow and don't want to change. Doesn't hurt that KDE is still more or less the same as it was when I started with Linux, but with some enhancements, because I've mostly been using it the same way all that time and it's actually not as bloated as GNOME is now.

@davidturcotte831 Hey fellow Menuet user. I still have a floppy sitting in a box with a really old version. People don't understand bloat until they see an OS with a GUI running off of a single floppy disk.

The server responds that it was edited on March 13th of this year. So you'd think they would have addressed the parts that are outright wrong today, but nope.

Something that not many people think about is that you don't need to register with any central authority to install Linux. You can install it on any device you want and no one need know. What's the market share in the server space? Somewhere in the 90-99% range? How many cell phones run Android? Forget GNU, it's irrelevant as you don't need it to have a working Linux install, but consider how many computers your average Linux user will have and most, if not all, will have it installed. So forgetting market share, solely for the sake of argument, most "normies" are lazy and if it's not installed by default, as in a pre-built, then most won't use it. What's more is most people are unwilling to find alternative programs for the things they use on a daily basis. Once people are used to things, they don't want to switch. Here I am 20 plus years later and I'm still using vim, but mostly because I can't figure out how to exit.

@ArcticPrimal The cost of Windows is built into both your usage of it and anyone buying a pre-built with it already installed. If you use it, whether you've "pirated" it or not, you are the product and thus paying with your data. Also, it has been proven that they will delete your data if it violates some policy they have.

@ArcticPrimal No, you're just making compromises because you care more about the convenience of buying something online and having it shipped to your door versus having to pick it up yourself at a brick and mortar. That loss of privacy does hurt you, and in ways that you may not have thought about, and if you're lucky may never have to think about, but those ways could lead to all kinds of negative consequences that you shouldn't have to face and wouldn't were you more concerned with your privacy.

Sure, *nix, but Linux and Darwin, or whatever Macs use for the kernel now, are not the same. Linux doesn't even have source code in common with the original UNIX.

@chrisstone2742 Well, no. Few with sanity would argue that Alpine and any others like it are not Linux based OS's, and yet they avoid GNU. Android exists and uses no GNU. And you can do LFS and exclude the GNU at your own discretion. The operating system is Mint, Fedora, Arch, Ubuntu, Slackware, whatever distribution you use. GNU just happens to be along for the ride on most Linux based OS's.

That's precisely why I think all games should be open source. If they can't figure out how to properly prevent cheating in the multiplayer space then they should let the community figure it out for them. They could sell games as encrypted archives with all the assets contained therein and the engines could be open source. It would allow them to be ported without the developers actually doing that work themselves.

It seems weird to me that you would ditch KDE because you couldn't figure out how to change some settings, but then again it does have a bloated settings panel and I've had to resort to using the find function on an occasion or two myself.

I haven't installed UT on this computer, but I've been playing U1 a bit. Any chance you play that online at all? I tend to like playing through the single player missions with other people since it often makes them more fun.

@ErichToven Yeah, it did, surprisingly. Back when I first played UT on Linux it ran at a paltry 1fps, but then again at the time I had a 533mhz celery with on-board graphics. I haven't played UT in a long while, but I've been playing U1 through WINE and it runs faster on this computer than it did on Win98 originally. I'll have to find my discs for UT and install it soon, but I don't think the original Linux binary would still work, even if I could find it.

Why do so many people want to edit PDF's? If you want a format you can edit, use one that was designed for it like an ODT or plain text.

@pawouapproval984 "Literally" no one? I doubt that. There are quite a few companies that actively support Linux, even going so far as to pay developers to write for it. If they don't accept resumes in ODT format I'd be surprised, but that's not even a valid example of needing to edit PDF's. I can print to or export to PDF from any printing capable app, but that's not what I would call editing.

I can mostly agree with that, but unless you're a graphic designer there won't be many, if any, features from PhotoShop that you'll want to use in GIMP that won't be there.

The kernel upgrading quickly has no bearing on writing device drivers as they don't need to be compiled in, they can be loadable modules and the interface for drivers has largely remained unchanged. It's just that manufacturers are either fed FUD that they believe and are unwilling to learn it's false or they're paid off by MicroSoft to not develop for Linux.

@AlanDike Right, so when they moved the driver it caused friction, but most normies won't update their OS often enough to see friction like that. Especially now days they'll expect the OS to update on its own. Mobile OS's do it, and both Windows and MacOS do it. While it's possible for Linux to do it, not every distro does.

@pw1187 It's really hard to make the argument that there's no market for something that the manufacturers won't even attempt, and largely because of lucrative contracts with MicroSoft. What's worse is every time they even play at attempting to sell such a product they make it with as many compromises as they can at the highest price they think they can get away with. If all things were equal and no contracts with MicroSoft existed then they'd sell the Linux version at $500 less and the hardware would be no compromises.

I had to look up Abbyy FineReader and I see that if you want to use it now it's Windows and Mac only and costs $100 a year on one, $70 on the other. I don't care about the $165 corporate license, but that's possibly an issue for some. However, if that's seriously the only reason you keep using Windows and you're possibly still using an older copy, why not try either a VM or if that's too much of a hassle, WINE or even Proton, or or have you tried Okular? I've found that even most crappy government forms work perfectly fine with it and that's the only type of PDF I ever need to enter information into.

@stevehorne5536 I can't say as though I've used OCR ever. The one or two times I've needed something in the computer I just type it in by hand. But I'll have a look at Tesseract and see if that's useful. I don't think Okular can do OCR and to be honest the few times I've tried to do text selection on a generated PDF it hasn't handled columnized text very well. I'm assuming that text selection isn't being handled as some kind of OCR mechanism but I'm not sure how the PDF's I'm reading on a daily basis are generated.

Market share is irrelevant. Consider that there's no central registry for Linux users so no way to verify it anyway, but more than 90% of servers use it, and every Android phone is a Linux based device, not to mention all the embedded platforms like routers and the like.

Yep, I use KDE and even though most complain about it being bloated, it starts off at less than a gig of memory usage, and grows over a month or two of uptime to maybe 7 or 8. Simple logout and login always fixes that, init 3; init 4 on occasion, but I only ever reboot for extended power outages or kernel updates.

@SisypheanRoller You might not need to change flags at all if you only use open source libraries that are available for both systems. Like say pthreads, GTK or Qt, SDL et cetera, and then it'll just compile on both. Since most Linux distros come pre-installed with those libraries, if you were a Windows developer who used them, once setup on your system it would just work between the two.

This is why all games should be open source. If they want to prevent cheating for multiplayer uses then they need to do it entirely on the server. If they can't figure out how then they should let the community handle it. I know few will agree with this viewpoint, but a game publisher could still make money if every game was open source. Assets aren't source code, and forgoing regressive definitions of open source could be published as separate entities.
