All of my 32-bit hardware is in storage, just in case I need it again. It's hard to believe that hardware that was new when I was growing up is already deprecated. Yet another instance of something that makes me feel old. On the plus side, I have the skills now that if necessary I could write my own OS for those systems.

@Finkelfunk It's not a boast, it's just a statement of a fact. I've already got a single threaded kernel. It's just a matter of time before I implement multi-threading. I already have my own compiler. I guess I just need to write a browser, but that's a multi-year project that I'm not really willing to take on just yet.

Yeah, for an Australian, he's remarkably easy to understand, even at 2x.

@towel9245 That depends on what you want to get out of it. You could go for real mode and make a DOS clone, or you could go for protected mode and either use an older kernel or write one from scratch. If you've never written any multithreaded applications, then I would suggest not trying to do a 32-bit protected mode kernel from scratch as a first attempt. The OSDev website has a load of resources for getting to that point, the boot process, setting up the IDT's and GDT's, the whole nine yards. Just add the org extension and read to your heart's content.

@PaulHenning84 I'm not forcing you to use shit. I'm not forcing you to write software for me. Nor would I want to, because no doubt you'd write inferior software. So what bearing does my choice have on you? Oh, that's right, none. Your complaint is stupid and meaningless.
