I still don't know how anyone thinks that they can multi-task in that way, as one activity will suffer, especially if you're a programmer. If you need more screen real estate it makes more sense to just scale up the size of your monitor. I'm sure that sounds elitist because not everyone has the money and monitors don't go up linearly in price, but that would be the one exception where I could understand it and that's never been the reason anyone has given me. Personally, I've always loved KDE's multiple desktops feature as I only have one monitor, and have always used 12 desktops. I also missed all the problems with KDE 4 because I went from 3 to 5 before I upgraded. Not because I knew about any of the problems with 4, but because I upgrade infrequently.
