@queerdo I always leave it out on purpose. GNU as an organization has held open source back because of their stringent attitude about how open source should be. The fact that you can build a Linux distro without GNU also makes it a lie to add it.

I'd love to see a convergence of features where someone takes the best ideas from multiple distros and makes an uber-distro.

I don't remember how I found his channel, but he's doing some great work.

@queerdo Incorrect on your part. The GPL has been adopted by many, many projects and is one of the biggest hurdles that has to be overcome. It is the single largest reason why so many for-profit companies have rejected open source. And of course Stallman has promoted it with propagandistic zeal.

@queerdo Ah yes, the standard "but then they wouldn't contribute" argument. It's just as stupid and asinine as saying "do what I want and never be evil". Microsoft for decades used GPL'd code and didn't attribute nor did they contribute, nor for that matter did anyone take them to court over it. And it was proven that they used GPL code when the XP source was leaked. They still haven't been taken to court over it. So aside from your childish argument about contributing back to a project I've never heard of and don't care about, license restrictions have done nothing to stop any mega corporations. Nor have they garnered increased contributions. What you fail to see, and likely don't care about because you're an idealogue that fully supports "copyleft", which isn't an actual legal term, is that the big guys steam roll open source anyway, and the little guys are scared of touching GPL code at all. If it weren't for Linus Torvalds, open source would be worse off, and he rejected the GPL in many ways.

@queerdo All the examples? You used one. And the license you mentioned is irrelevant to a company like Amazon. They're evil and wouldn't care if it were GPL'd code either. They wouldn't contribute regardless yet you think that's a valid example of anything. It's not a matter of whether it makes sense to you, since you're clearly not intelligent enough to see cause and effect over the course of the last 40 years.

@queerdo That's okay, because you don't have anything at all. Open source has been relegated to the sidelines all of these years because of regressive idiots like you and insane idealogues like Stallman. Bringing up a policy of Microsoft's and a single project does not add up to two examples, nor does it amount to a valid point. And I'm not saying other corporations wouldn't behave the same as Amazon and history has proven they all behave the same. What I am saying is that were it not for viral licensing such as the GPL, the little guys would have embraced open source and we'd have seen far more development. Momentum would have been built and contributions would have been higher.

@queerdo Oddly enough that's exactly the response I was expecting.

My memory's not good enough to remember exactly when I started using it, but as you very well know, Slackware is my favorite distro. However, I have tried out other distros and will in the future if someone recommends a new one that looks cool. While Haiku isn't a Linux, you might consider trying it out. I used a VM, but you've probably got enough spare hardware laying about to try it on bare metal.
