I actually agree. Not everyone knows or cares to know how to compile software, so for those lazos, I'd say sure, charge for the convenience factor. After all, some projects do take a lot of time and effort to build, and there's always the electricity you use to do that. So why shouldn't someone charge for that time if they want to.

Since the license allows selling it, regardless of who is doing the selling, I'm not so sure it's legal for them to outright ban anyone from selling it, regardless of whether you can acquire it from elsewhere or in any particular format. That said, unless what you're selling is the effort to produce a binary so people who don't know or care to compile things for themselves can use it, I feel like it shouldn't be done, but that's just my opinion.

I can certainly agree with all of that, and it's a viewpoint that no one seems to have mentioned, though I haven't read all the comments. I also wonder how they've implemented their store, like is it some sort of web app that they have a local app for that wraps that web interface, or do they have a dedicated program for it. I would think that a dedicated app would be better for usability and security as well, and with their large quantity of developers they should do it that way if they haven't already. Although, I guess that's tangential to your point and completely irrelevant, just something I'm wondering.

I hope you're right, because two out of three is too close for comfort. 43 years of history can't be wiped out by 4 years of supporting that which they tried so hard to wipe out. On the other hand, look at all of the companies which are decades old that no longer do the things they did when they started. I think it'd be funny if that theory that someone posited recently came to be where Windows became yet another Linux distro. (Also, I'm aware that they've opened a lot of source through the years, one of my favorite compilers, LCC, came from MS Research, but releasing a piece of software as open source and actually supporting open source aren't actually equivalent.)

I agree with that. They could have a whole section for open source software and a handy donate button next to the install button would be awesome. No need to sell anything then, though they still could, or even opt for one over the other.

Hit the nail on the head.

Is it as easy as apt-get?

Know what EEE means? They've got the first two, the third isn't a stretch given their history.

@mfThump I started using vim around 25 years ago. It's amazing how I'm typing this comment there, but I still don't know how to exit the program.
