Something I've been working on with regards to my programming language is that code compiles to a bytecode by default with the intent of having a conversion program per platform to generate the final binary when it's run on a target platform. I've also been working on a VM specifically with the intention that it might replace JS as a web language, but I have no delusions that anyone will ever use it even once it has been released. Eventually I'd like to implement an alternative protocol from HTTP and use the language itself as a markup, assuming I haven't bodged the design. If I've designed it right, hopefully I could use the bytecode as a distribution format, sort of the way Java works, but hopefully more streamlined.
