  1. We likely wouldn't have the desktop capability that we have now without them. There's less fragmentation today than there was 20 years ago despite having at least 100 times more distros than then, because we have a lot more coordination and cooperation today and people at least give it a shot at adhering to the de facto standards. Although it could still be better, we're miles ahead of where we used to be and I like that.
