Yeah, and a lot of people don't understand just how big the PC gaming market really is. I'd wager there's at least a percentage point, probably more, of gamers that use windows in a VM or just use WINE and all get counted as windows users even with a Linux system underpinning it. I haven't even used a console since the OG Xbox, and it was a gift anyway, as I'd never buy an MS product myself.

@Hunnter2k3 Not really where I was going with it, and illustrating one of the key problems with Linux as it is. With my idea, it'd be completely from scratch, no recycling of Android or even Linux all by itself. The API would definitely need to be done from scratch. I'm definitely a curmudgeon, so I hate all API's for various reasons. And I'm old school, so I'd write it all in C, if I were to be the one to write it.

@terrydaktyllus1320 Why'd you switch from Slackware to Gentoo? Was it getting too bloated even then?

I'm still hoping for a new system to crop up that's open source and not based on Linux in anyway. Especially if it doesn't use any GNU software. I'd like to see a single unified platform that allows for divergence out of the box but just be so new that none exists yet. Maybe if someone came up with a design based around everything that exists now but made it clean and consistent. Pipe dream, I know.

@fuseteam If you design it from scratch, version 1.0 will be that way. It would just take a lot of work.

@iskamag Well, those are all standardized API's and file formats are they not? Though, I'll admit it, I hate POSIX. ELF would be good to copy, maybe XDG, just not POSIX.
1
@fuseteam Sure, that's the easy way out. I'd rather go full-tilt insane and start from 100% empty scratch. And it's actually more like 666 different distros. ;)

@iskamag I mean the API, not the source code. I'm not sure if it's a colloquialism, but when I say from scratch, I mean with 0% of the pre-existing code. It'd probably be easier to say what's right with POSIX. It's great that there's a standard that all the major distros and beyond have stuck to for compatibility, even if in some cases that's only at a source code level, and some of what it provides I do like, but things like exec*() and all the other function patterns like it just make me want to barf.
1
@iskamag I'm not so sure you understand what I was saying at all. BusyBox isn't an API, and if you're attempting to say just use the utility programs portion of POSIX, well, that too I wouldn't want to copy entirely. Obviously the core things I would, but not necessarily in function or full interface, but the names of the programs at least. It's always bugged me that to restrict what files `ls` lists I have to call a second program to do the filtering. I would incorporate filtering directly into `ls`.

@iskamag The word distro is short for distribution, which implies nothing about any particular piece of software. Windows 11 can be a distro, but would not be Linux at all. I'm assuming that English isn't your first language, because you've completely misconstrued what I was saying and where I was going. So never mind.
1
@iskamag You took part of what I said out of context and completely misconstrued everything. Is English your native language? Clearly you are failing at reading comprehension, and need me to be more blunt. You are not understanding me at all, and this conversation is over.
1
@fuseteam Nope, not misunderstanding anything, just being misunderstood.
