Are you joking? Corporations go for RHEL because it means they get support, and they pay for that support. Everything that Red Hat is doing has no bearing on their corporate customers, only the people using their work for free and without support. Their corporate customers won't give a shit about what they're doing vis a vis the freeloaders, so they'll continue making money and nothing will change except that the freeloaders will abandon them. Of course, that would be a huge mistake because if they don't have community engagement then they might stop contributing code to the projects they contribute to, or worse might just shift to a completely closed source model.

I'll agree that the optics are bad, and they certainly could have sent a better and more consistent message, but they have a lot of valid points.

Exactly, it was just a poorly worded response, but they're absolutely correct. If Paolo Bonzini had been the one to respond in the first place and with that list, then I think the optics of the situation would have been significantly better and they probably would have faced less backlash, but they're still right that they can't just accept and merge willy-nilly.

@Aeduo By crappy economic system, are you trying to call capitalism bad? Or do you mean something else?

@AlucardNoir Two notes, Solaris wasn't based on Linux and the correct spelling of the past tense of pay is paid. Otherwise, I agree with all of those points. In the real world, if you don't work, you don't eat.

@abegosum It wasn't exactly a dismissal. It's not like they can just accept a random patch and merge it without testing it and at the time the patch was submitted they didn't have a ticket on it, which can make it take more time to check it out and get it approved.

@BubbleBeeee True, and I think they should've just had Paolo talk in the first place with no one else interjecting, but they certainly need to coordinate that.

@baguettedad I have literally never heard anyone pronounce it any other way than to say it like the name Jason. Although, I'd rather call it non-existent, but that's a whole other discussion.

Not only can they monetize it, but they don't even technically have to share the source code if it's code that they've written. Code written by others and under the GPL would still need to be shared, but could still be monetized as well. Note that even code shared under the GPL in the past can be relicensed by the copyright holder and put under a differently restrictive license if they so choose, but the old code would still be available.
