The way I look at it, the whole point of using RHEL is for the support that they provide which you have to pay for regardless of anything else. If you want that you become one of their customers, otherwise you get nothing. I don't have a problem with that aspect of it, and if they choose to keep the source they've written closed either. If downstream distros wish to continue supporting their distro they can just take charge of maintenance on the existing code which they have every right to use. They just won't get future updates which makes their job harder, but not impossible. It'll mean any distro based off of RHEL will diverge, not just from each other more than they already have, but from the base as well.

@locatemarbles That's certainly a possible outcome. It needn't be, but I guess this is where we find out if the maintainers have the spare time or not, or if they decide to pass the various projects on to someone who does. Of course, this will also tell us what kind of people they are, because if someone doesn't have the kind of time necessary to maintain a distribution, the moral thing to do for the good of the community would be to step aside and allow someone to take over. Will that be an option they even consider, we will see.
