It's funny you should mention Linux there because it didn't start on Linux or Solaris and was actually bought by Sun. It also wasn't originally written in Java either.

I used it a bit a couple of decades back, and kword which was really weird compared to other word processors even back then.

That's a fair point. I don't understand why old code gets removed from code bases either. It's not like maintenance of it is a valid excuse because you can just leave it in and not maintain it and the end user will either do so on their end or become a contributor to the project and fix it for you. And as a plus, after all of that, leaving it in might net you more users.

@fss1704 Rust is a bad choice. It's just another trendy language like Java. Note how there are few if any job postings for Rust. C++ may take longer to learn, but it allows you to write in a multitude of styles. Or you could use C which is still a better language even if it does lack syntactic sugar for a lot of things. C is simple and still allows you to do some really complex things.

A lightyear is a measure of distance, not time.

Did you just install your OS, or are you on Windows? I built LibreOffice from source because I couldn't find a pre-built package for my system and it built out of the box with no issues. Later on I found an AppImage and just moved to using that because it took like 30 minutes to build from source each update. I would suggest that unless you need file format compatibility, you'd be better off starting from scratch.

What?

I'm pretty sure that's pronounced Lay-Tex, but whatever. As for Office Suites, has everyone forgotten that OpenOffice got its start as a fork of Star Office? I have a copy of that and Solaris for x86 on a disc in one of my as yet still packed boxes, and as bad as they were, they existed. Don't forget the dead and buried, just leave them buried is all.

Completely agreed, what's wrong with plain text when you need something that just works and everywhere.
