My take is that they should've named the project Y. It would have given them some really cool naming possibilities with programs that make use of it. The logo could have been a giant question mark. Every program could have been ythis and ythat, with people asking the obvious dad joke question of "why indeed". Totally a missed opportunity.

Do you use systemd or something else for your init system? I've got the older SysV style init and editing /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to include a line to if [ -x /usr/bin/sddm ]; then exec /usr/bin/sddm -nodaemon; fi # is all it would take. If you're using systemd then I have no clue what it does or how to configure it.

@RichardBronosky The way my system is setup, SDDM has a dropdown for selecting between Wayland and X11 for KDE, along with a few other options such as Xfce and whatnot. Looking at the sddm config, it's in usr share sddm scripts and X11 is Xsetup while Wayland is wayland-session. I can't use slashes too much there or I'll get banned again, at least I think that's why.

@RichardBronosky I don't, but it was just how it was setup when it was installed. For the most part it's just basic Slackware.

For better or worse, and only time will tell at this point, X isn't going to see further development. If it stops working altogether, and I see that happening within the next 5 to 10 years, then Wayland will be your only option. There's a lot of reasons I have reservations about this impending future, but hopefully they disprove my doubts.
