Personally, I don't mind swearing and do so like a sailor, both in and out of code. Back in my saltier days I hung out in the programming chat room on Yahoo and got so tired of being asked dumb homework questions that I eventually just did a few of them and made everything an insult. The programs worked too, but if you read through the code it was a sort of poem telling the person asking the homework question to FOAD. The best parts were the ones where I abused the preprocessor to combine various fragments to almost make grammatically correct sentence structure.

Very little has changed? Have you read any of the C standards past 89? It has generics for fucks sake and people still think of it as though it's the same language described in K&R. Your concerns on the Linux kernel show that you don't know how to program since LOC doesn't equate to binary size. The bloated default build for my system is 11MB for the "huge" with 6.8MB for the "generic" and a custom "lite" build at 2.5MB, so not all of the code will be included in the final binary, especially for a kernel.
