  2. Neat, now everyone can do it from the standard library. I still wish they'd implement the interface the way I did. I overloaded division on lists and strings to allow dividing them into specifically sized chunks. I even overloaded the modulus operator so you could siphon off any oddball chunk. I should probably post it up somewhere because I really think others should copy my method here.

  3. Personally, I would require that the name representation was always lowercase anyway, even on initialization. As for fun with operators, I like to overload / on strings in languages that don't already do so to act as the split operation. Say you've got a string that's s = "foo,bar,baz,luhrmann"; then a = s / ','; would yield an array of strings containing ["foo", "bar", "baz", "luhrmann"].

  4. The only problem is that cats don't make sounds when they move. I had a bell collar on my cat for years and the only time it made a sound was when she ran somewhere. However, 99% of the time, unless I was looking at her, she never ran anywhere. She was the most ninja cat I've ever had and I can't remember a single time when I heard her coming if I wasn't looking at her first.

  5. The games I always recommend are Nibbles and Gorilla because of QBasic. Back when I was in high school I had a book on Pascal and one of the lessons was on writing a chat bot. Writing a parser from scratch to try and understand common language was a very edifying experience.

  9. It's a type annotation. I was just playing around with the interpreter and it doesn't prevent me from assigning other types to a variable, so I'm not really sure what the point is other than to provide documentation for anyone reading the source code, but if you just call a constructor like that it's redundant for seemingly no reason. Maybe someone more knowledgeable about Python can correct us both, but for what it's worth, I wouldn't bother unless the declaration is separate from your first initialization of a variable.

  10. I still wish they'd provide a flag to have groupby sort for you in one operation. I know, copying data and using an iterator is faster, blah blah. However, it's going to be pretty infrequent that the majority of people should want to use groupby without sorting, and if you've got a large enough dataset that it would be problematic, then you're probably using the wrong language anyway. I'd really like to see a test of lazy evaluation versus eager evaluation when you want to convert an entire list anyway.

  15. I've been meaning to look up how Python handles this construct, so thanks for saving me the trouble. I still have a few questions though. Can you omit the "as foo" portion of the header? If it lets you do that, how does it handle resolving function calls in scope? Say you have a write function in the scope of the file object, if you were to just call write directly, would it automatically call the correct one that applies to that object, or would it go to a globally scoped write function?

  17.  @Michallote  For your case, just use a tree. Another possibility is a sparse array of arrays, but I'm not sure how efficiently Python would handle that. If we were talking about C and you were manually handling your data structures, then definitely a sparse array of arrays.

  18. You explained how to use it, but not why, which I feel might be important for the newbies in the crowd. Truthfully, I feel like a feature like this should be part of the language proper and not require an import. It's basically just function pointers. And you're right, it definitely does belong in typing as it's specifically for declaring types. I also feel like brackets for generics is a bit of a weird choice, especially in a language where brackets already have a lot of overloaded uses. When you consider how little usage braces get in Python, it seems like that would have been a perfect fit.

  19. Basically it's lazy evaluation as someone else's function. You can get the same behavior in your own code if you write the loop yourself, it's just that sometimes you want to call it at different intervals and the lazy evaluation aspect means you might use less memory and not take an inordinate amount of time. To use an example from C, it's the difference between repeatedly calling strtok() to split a string and having a function that you write which creates an array of strings and splits it all in one go. I'm not as versed in Python and don't know if you can change inputs to a generator on the fly, but in C you can change the separators you pass to strtok() with any given call and it'll work correctly, whereas if you had an all in one function you'd either have to account for an array of multiple separator strings, or only get one set of separators. If that's not clear enough, then it might be worth it to ask @Indently to make a video explaining the implementation details of the generator construct, if he hasn't already, and he may have, I just haven't watched all of his videos.

  20. First of all, indefinite is not infinite. Second of all, even if it were limited to 64-bit integers, iterating one at a time would take a very long time. However, it uses a bignum type and is thus limited only by your available memory. If we're talking about counting one at a time on a modern computer with gigabytes of RAM, even with a really fast computer it might still be counting when you die of old age. Granted, I've got a potato and even counting from 1024**4 by the same after about 30 minutes I killed the process and it was still only to 21 digits.

  22. I would argue that in example 10, that address isn't even useful for the programmer. However, with regards to constants, could you not overload the assignment operator for a class and prevent assignments from altering the constant? I know that's likely pointless since the user could override the function, but it would at least be one more step you could take which might prevent accidental reassignments. Also, why don't type annotations generate errors? I was playing with 3.11 and I'd swear that they generated errors in function signatures, but 3.14 doesn't, so either they changed that behavior or I was remembering incorrectly, but either way I think they should generate errors within the language interpreter in all cases where you use the wrong type.

  23. I scrolled through your video list and saw that you did videos on C++ 3 years ago. Maybe you could do a short video showing how you would do this in C++. In the past you might push everything into a vector of pair's and sort by the value, or you might swap the key and value into a new map, but I'm sure there's some functional method that people would use now.

  25. I never really thought about it before, but is it grouping the types like it would a tuple? Would that be a useful language feature in other areas, regardless of whether that's what Python is doing?

  27.  @cookie_space  I don't use an IDE. It's either vim or the python3 interpreter from the command line whenever I use it. The only time I've discovered that it actually errs is when used for parameter typing for functions, but I guess warnings will have to suffice for other uses. It would be nice if Python would use it to prevent assignment of unequal types, but in a language that treats variables as really variable, that's probably asking too much.

  28. @ivanheffner2587 In principle I agree with this statement, but I wonder if you apply that sentiment universally. For instance, would you advise people to not use goto in C? For what little my opinion might be worth, I apply this principle even to C, because lacking many of the features of other languages, goto is a useful error handling construct if used correctly. My general rule is, all things in moderation, even moderation itself.

  29. I like Python's slice syntax, and it's good that I've seen this video to know that I can save a slice format because this is yet another feature I think my own language was missing. I finally upgraded my local copy of Python to 3.9 last year, and apparently the "walrus" operator and the match statement were added in 3.10, which is kind of annoying. Oh well, just need to checkout a later version, and I'm aiming for v3.11.0 and ask me in a couple of hours if it works, because yes I am that paranoid to run `make test`. One thing I keep wondering though, why doesn't Python implement operator+ for most things. For sets it makes sense to have operator| instead, but it wouldn't hurt to make operator+ be an alias or even do something weird like collapse a set into an array. I implemented + and += for all of the container classes in my standard library, both for single elements and other containers. It makes no sense to me why people keep pushing back on that.

I've spent too much time going back and looking at things I did when I was younger, albeit a far longer timescale than what you're showing here, and it's not good to focus on what you've done wrong in the past. Focus on the future and strive to always be better.

  32. I've known for years that you can do that, but it's still just wild to me that you can change class values for all future instances by changing Class.Member to whatever you want. Makes me wonder, does Python have the ability to do what C++ does by making member variables private?

  33. My first was QBasic. A bit more structured in some respects, less so in others, but I didn't think they were particularly bad. I still have my TI-85 though, and ZShell is a lot of fun. Although, programs ran faster when you wrote them in assembly.

  34. As a corollary to multiplying strings and arrays, I overloaded / so that I could divide them as well. Take for instance "ababab"/"ab" would yield 3, and "bababa"/3 would yield "ba". You could probably make a video on showing an implementation of that. It would likely be better than mine.

  36.  @charliecandimaunten1635  I suppose I should've been more clear and stated "good binaries". Cython generates equivalent code, but not particularly well optimized. I'd never heard of Nuitka before, so I'll have to do some investigation. As for more verbose, @staticmethod is definitely more verbose than simply using static, and there's quite a few other decorators like that. Also, C++ makes the this pointer implicit. Sure, you can rename it, if you feel so inclined, but by default you don't have to do anything and you've got this.

  38. This is why languages need explicit pointer types. A single character to modify behavior is the best method. I do wonder, is it possible to modify the copy constructor of built-in types? Could you force arrays to perform a deep copy in that way or would you have to explicitly call the .deepcopy() method? Not that I'm saying you should do that for everything, but if it were as simple as `a = *b;` to perform a deep copy versus `a = b;` to perform a shallow or reference copy, that would be cool.

For instance, using your example, you couldn't replace `text = f.read()` with `text = read()` and it work appropriately through the file object that denotes the inner scope? And also, Python doesn't have an underscore as default notation, right?

  40. @eliavrad2845 That's a shame. It'd be more useful if it allowed anonymous access as a new scope with a default object. Although, I can understand why they had to limit it in this way since Python doesn't have a scope resolution operator.

  41. One thing to note about IndentationError, is that you can get it from mixing tabs and spaces to indent, or even using extra spaces here and there. I always recommend that people set their editor to auto-insert spaces at their desired tab width and to only ever use spaces for indentation, but that may just be me.

  49. Personally, I only like type annotations when declaring a variable or when it's not obvious what type it will be from a function call. I use them as a sort of documentation of what type is expected, even if the language won't enforce it on variables. It does on function signatures, so why not everywhere else where you use them.
