  1. It's more than simple pride. Those told they might be an infection risk or even in danger of catching a disease often see it as an insult claiming they are impure (or at least unclean) The closer a culture is to superstitious explanations for disease, the more there are negative connotations to disease susceptibility. It takes generations to move the emotional connotations from "diseases happen because you're sinful" to "diseases happen because you're dirty" and generations more to move to a totally rational perception of disease and even more generations to push antiquated notions of disease truely to the fringes instead of a mere minority. This is an ongoing struggle in the fight against disease to this day and will continue to be so in some parts of the world even when everyone reading this right now is dead.
