  1. One of my favorite intermediary forms in this period used small pieces of wood like sticks. You make at least one side flat, write the note on each end, and break it in half with each party getting one half. Since no 2 sticks are going to break quite the same way, only the original halves of the stick are going to match. Medieval counterfeit&forgery protection. Crude? Yes, but damn clever.
