  1. The reason crossbows have a reputation as more powerful and longbows have better range comes down to physics. Specifically ke=mv^2 and air resistance being proportional to velocity. Heavy crossbows can be, and often were, made heavier than any person can physically draw, and so bolts can have a higher kinetic energy off the string than an arrow. However, since they have a light projectile, more of that energy is in velocity and so their bolts will loose that energy much faster than a longbow's arrow. A high arc makes this difference even stronger, obviously, but it's actually the difference in projectile weight that creates it.
