I did some research a while back for some RPG reasons I was getting way to technical with, and found that, for my purposes, iron and bronze had roughly equivalent mechanical properties. I've seen some evidence that there was a little high-carbon steel floating around back when both were in use (the primative smelting process produced varrying carbon content, but the higher stuff could be seperated out), but if we're just talking about the kind of iron/low carbon steel that was common, sometimes one or the other would be harder.
