  2. Even if you avoid the plates, the weight is still useful at striking mail, and the added thickness makes it good for thrusting too.

  3. Yes, if you can hit them, striking there is an excellent target. Nearly all the blood for the entire arm flows through the armpit, so the bleeding is comparable to severing the arm. Also, there are the nerves that control the arm (meaning they won't be able to use it to try and kill you while they bleed out). Even if you don't hit the center and just get the muscles controling the shoulder, you still make the arm basically useless.
