  1.  @draconisthewyvern3664  which is also 1 yard. Seriously, being able to visualize 1m as about 1 yard (which you probably ran into as a yardstick in school in the US) is really useful if you're wanting to get an idea of instead of doing precise measurements.

  2.  @franohmsford7548  required precision is determined by the acceptable margin for error. 1 yard being almost equal to 1 meter is acceptable for most situations where you're just doing a quick eyeball measurement of scale. Most people cannot eyeball multiples of 1yard+3inches intuitively, making it, while more accurate, less useful in a not insignificant number of situations. Of course, trade speed for precision in your measurements as the situation calls for.

  3. I will say that Imperial makes a lot more sense if you're a peasant and not using a base 10 system...not that that has much baring on the modern world.
