Just know the 1-3 countertop things you will use basically every single day. I would almost never use a blender so haven't justified the purchase of anything more than a small, cheap food processor that mostly collects dust in a cabinet. I will never NOT have a rice cooker, though, even though I could technically do it on the stove because I do make rice that often and don't want my attention and stove split for it. Buy specialty tools to make the things you're already doing easier and better, not because you think you'll start doing something if you get the tool. Unless it's small and cheap or absolutely necessary, if you cared enough to use the specialty tool enough to justify the purchase, you'd be doing it with the tools you already have.

Part of the problem is people are taught mythology in highschool economics classes and don't understand what currency even IS. Pre-monitary barter economies never existed and currency (even when it was coins of actual gold and silver) gets its exchange value by the universal demand created by the government accepting it as payment for taxes, not because of some nebulous "faith". This was inevitable when the "education" system did half the work for the con men before the marks even graduated highschool.
