  2. Religion and tradition are never acceptable justifications for ANY violations of human rights. Slavery is also endorsed by the texts of all Abrahamic religions but forbidden by all civilized societies. We're all held to the same baseline ethical standards regardless of our beliefs.

Are we really surprised by certain types of bad behavior when every time guys take a piss they have a reminder that our society views THEIR consent as irrelevant normally (and a punchline if they end up on the wrong side of the law)? We say 🍇 is bad, but we sure don't act like we believe it as a country. Nor do we think of men and boys as human enough to even bother remembering that hurt people hurt people.

  4. Keep in mind that not all FGM is equal, but is all wrong. Circumcision is not the same as clitoral removal, of course, but not all FGM is that. I do have to push back on one point, though. BOTH treat the child as sexual property.

  5. Exactly. We either believe in the importance of consent or we don't. In every way imaginable we teach guys through our actions that consent is irrelevant. We surgically violate them as babies, treat their consent as expected to any advance from a woman, and turn their consent into a punchline if they ever step outside the letter of the law. Is it any surprise that some percentage of guys take the lesson of "we don't care about men's consent" to mean that everyone's consent is irrelevant? Hurt people hurt people.
